Does anyone recognize these symptoms?

 I'm running BTNTape 2.0 on an A2000 / A2090A to a Cipher 540 1/4" tape
drive. After fooling around with the order I load the cartridge, mount the
device, etc, I can get TAR to read from the drive, but after some
(variable) number of blocks are read, the system locks up solid. No
pointer, no keyboard, no screen updates, no GURU, just locked. If I do a
slower operation, like type TAPE: opt h, it will read through the tape
without hanging. If I up the blocks/read, etc, to make it run faster, it
locks more quickly. Seems to be some sort of timing problem, as the number
of blocks that get read before it locks varies anywhere from 10 to 1200.
This is so tantalizingly close to working that it's driving me bats....
Any suggestions/ideas/hints??? Thanks....
