I once forgot to plug any memory (even the 256K expansion) into my Amiga
1000 when I took it apart.  For some reason, my compiles wouldn't
work under make, but would if I typed them in by hand (Manx 3.6).
Very perplexing...

But Peter, workbench is only 2 bitplanes... that's 38016 bytes, so the
O.S., sans WB screen, is 54668 bytes.  Still pretty damn small!
