This is window manager material.  See the "olwm" manpage.

I think not.  .Xdefaults is the place where applications look for users'
customizations.  Thus, each application specifies its own resources.
There are some conventions, e.g. "foreground" and "background" for colors,
that are shared by many applications, but there's no "Big Book of Settings."

OTOH, the window system manpages (olwm, openwin, etc.) are good places to
start in looking for general settings.  Also see the manpages for
system-utility-type applications, e.g. cmdtool, shelltool, textedit,
filemgr.
