Don, someone already beat you to the suggestion.  Nobody thought it
was "glamorous" enough to pursue it.

Has anyone looked back at the old BOF notes?  There was a plan for an
intelligent card, built around a standard UART.  And now, with the
availability of 386 drivers, (wasn't there even a SLIP driver just
posted?), this would be an interesting project to chase.  If someone
would be interested in making the card, I'd lend a hand in doing the
driver development.
