DiskFit from SuperMac Technology, 485 Potrero Ave, Sunnyvale, CA 94086, 
phone (408)245-0646 does nearly everything you want.  I use it regularly, and
like it a lot.  It does not support automatically copying back to the main
disk.  After all, you might have had to restore an application from an
installation disk, and you wouldn't want a newer but unwanted version making
its way back from the backup.  Cost is reasonable, I think (I had it purchased
for me by my department, so I don't know the actual cost.)
