Yesterday I hastily referenced a paper discussing the merits of
destop mail system - gateway-wide area vs "direct" desktop mail.

The paper is available via anonymous ftp from

casbah.acns.nwu.edu in /pub/jlnstuff/desktop-mail.

It was written by John Norstad (appologies for the atrocious mangling of
John's name in my previous post.)

The paper is a text file. Thought provoking.
