We experimented a lot with 3rd party memory for these boxes some time
back. We had mixed results. In general we found that the memory had to
be good quality and all the memory in the box should be of the same
vintage and model. Ie. mixing memory from mips and cheap stuff usually
caused us grief.

If you have access to memory that you can take back, or memory that
you can mix and match, then it may be worth your while.

Another possibility is to call another Mips distributor. The price you
were quoted is nothing short of highway robbery!
