Since this question was asked, I came across a nice little program
called acm (which, from memory, stands for Air Combat Manager.) It runs
under Unix (BSD, not sure about AT&T) and X11, and sets up a server
daemon on a host machine that allows several players across a network to
dogfight.

I compiled and ran it on a Sun 4/20 running SunOS 4.1.1 and Open Windows
2.0. It is slightly jerky, but it works quite nicely. The source is
available for anon ftp on suna.mqcc.mq.oz.au [137.111.161.1], in
/pub/Sources/X/acm*. There are two versions, the initial unmodified
version, and a Sun version on which I modified (read hacked because I
don't have imake) the imake-produced makefiles so that it will compile
under OpenWin. Enjoy.
