Ah, well, there is such an animal.  It's called Scheme, and it has just
been standardized by the IEEE.  It's a small, lexically-scoped member
of the LISP family.  (Small in that the standard is only about 50
pages; compare this to _Common Lisp, The Language_ (Second Edition) at
just over 1000 pages.  (Yep, apples vs. oranges, but you get the point.))

Scheme even has a newsgroup, which is available as a mailing list digest
as well.  Have a look at comp.lang.scheme.

I'm not a spokesperson for SoftQuad or the IEEE, but I sure do like
their tastes in programming languages :-)
