Here's a book I haven't seen mentioned yet:

Khanna, Tarun "Foundations of Neural Networks", Addison-Wesley, 1990.

Its under 200 pages, but introduces many of the common architectures, and
provides a overview of the field. Models include associative memory,
perceptron, back-prop, competitive learning, linsker model, fukishima model,
adaptive resonance, hopfield and hoppensteadt models, boltzmann machine.
Only obvious omission seems to be the Kohonnen network. I like this book
because it has a engineering slant to it, as well as providing a good
"foundation". Check it out.
