Amen on that last point. I don't know of a single database company's
report writer that can handle proportionally-spaced type or font
switching easily, and certainly not in a manner that's easily portable
between output devices.

I have written report scripts in both Empress and Progress which create
LaTeX output. Their output looks better and more flexible than anything
I could do with the report scripts alone.
