Any ideas on how to transfer from an app to another app *and* back again?

Basically, I want someone using my app to be able to transfer out to another
program, do some work in that program, exit the other program, and end
up back in mine. I recall from IM-II that the global FinderName actually
determines which app (normally the Finder) is started when exiting a program.
So I guess I can work my way through transferring out - coming back
seems to be more difficult, though. I've used a similar process in
HyperCard, but would like to now do it in C. Any ideas or pointers would
be most appreciated.
