--[ My wee Microadventures

I am a fan of the author Alastair Humphreys for many years now; he
coined the term Microadventures [0], and I love the idea. Since I don't
drive and rely on self-powered travel or public transport, I have been
doing these every few months. In the last six months, though, I have
been more active on this front, spending most weekends on day-long walks
or cycles. I take my shortwave radio atop hills to see what I can find
or my metal detector to secluded foreshores.

I eventually bought myself a British Army Bivvy Bag [1] along with the
standard-issue Modular Sleep System, ex-surplus, for less than £100.
With this extra bit of kit, I am now able to walk and cycle a lot
further, just throwing down the bivvy wherever, without having to worry
about the time and heading home before dark. Given that we only get
around 6 hours of daylight for the next few months, it is quite a good
investment. I read "The Book of the Bivvy" by Ronald Turnbull, which was
a great primer on the history of the bivvy bag, one to checkout if you
are interested in the subject.

He has a book coming out called 'Local,' which I managed to get a week
ago. I think it's officially out in January. So far, so good; it's about
him covering his local area using an OS survey map around his house over
the course of a year. I'm looking forward to reading more and using some
of his ideas for own local surroundings.

... Reading this back it sounds like an Ad - its not!
