--- Reconnecting with Emacs 2026-05-17 --- It's not that I stopped using it, but for a while I've been using it just for editing code. I miss doing more with it, so while I'm not ready to go hog-wild and move all of my computing into it (I was nearly there while in grad school) I am going to start using it as a planner again. org-mode really is a killer feature for it. Need to re-familiarize myself with all of its shortcuts again! This year will mark twenty years since I first started using emacs. I don't think much remains of my original config, though. I did mess around with vi for a bit when I first started with Solaris, and then again recently when I went through what I think was a small mid-life computing crisis, but otherwise it's been all emacs all the time since 2006. At the peak of my usage, I was doing everything from editing files, to browsing my filesystem, to reading and composing emails, to reading rss and browsing the web, all from emacs. It was pretty cool to be able to take my entire computing world with me from machine-to-machine by merely copying some config files, but I don't think I want to go back to that world again. Sometimes dedicated programs are just better. Here's to another twenty years, old friend.
