Organizing digital libraries with WEBSOM for exploration

A new method, WEBSOM, has been developed for organizing
collections of full-text documents so that similar documents are
found near each other. The method is based on the use of the
Self-Organizing Map (SOM). The goal is to provide a general view
of the "document landscape", where after finding an interesting
area, one may roam around in its surroundings to find similar

addition to a description of the method, the pages contain a
www-browsable demonstration, where anyone may explore a document
map built of 4900 articles that appeared in the newsgroup
comp.ai.neural-nets during the last half year.
