Canine Companions for Independence

Whoever coined the phrase "man's best friend" must have been the
owner of a canine companion. We've all heard of the seeing-eye
dog, but did you know that there are other canines that are known
as "signal dogs"? They are used to alert people who are hearing
impaired or deaf to important sounds, such as alarm clocks, fire
alarms, and ringing telephones. There are also "social dogs," who
provide loving and nurturing interaction for people with
developmental disabilities.
