When the U.S. Federal Census was taken in 1880, respondents would
never have imagined that their data would someday be searchable by
the entire world. Nevertheless, little more than a century later,
here it is on the Internet and you may visit this interesting site
to help you tie together any loose ends in your genealogical
research. A one percent sampling of the 1880 U.S. Federal Census
includes more than 170,000 families and more than half a million
individuals; so, if your ancestors were living in the United
States during this year, you may be able to find them in this
database. Information on listed individuals includes name, race,
sex, age, relationship to head of household, marital status,
birthplace, father's birthplace, and mother's birthplace. Click on
the link called "must.have" before beginning your research. It
explains how the census files are organized and shows you how to
read the data within them.
