Mobius

"I was the sysop. I used the handle Sonic. And co-sysops, if you
are able to list those, were "Commander Keen" who later changed it
to "Commander Crap", as well as "Bryan", a talented ANSI artist in
the area who did the login screen. Sadly lost touch with Bryan
after shutting Mobius down. Mobius was a single-line BBS that ran
6.14a of VBBS (VirtualBBS) on an Acer desktop. Hardware was a
Pentium 75 Mhz, 8 MB of ram (later upgraded to 16, but might not
have been while the BBS was still running), 14.4 modem, and
something like a 500 MB hard drive. Later on the hardware did get
upgraded to either 28.8 or 56k, and did get a Seagate 1 GB that
lasted a year or two before the drive died. Tried to get it
running under OS/2 Warp v3 or Windows 3.1 or Windows 95, and never
could get it to run stable. So when I wanted to play a game, I
would take it down for a few hours. I cannot recall the user
count, but probably around 50 - 70 registered users, though maybe
20 were regular callers. Probably would have been more, but I
loved dropping into sysop chat and talking with them. Pretty sure
some just wanted to log in to play the door games and explore the
other areas, not chat with me =) For door games, we had LORD,
Usurper, The Pit, Food Fight, TradeWars 2002, and some others. The
files section supported X, Y and Z Modem transfers. And all of it
was free--there was no credit system. VBBS had its own scripting
system called Vscript, which is where I first learned to program.
Bryan helped me learn some of this. This was implemented in the
sysop pager and probably one or two areas. But it was a good
introduction to programming that would later lead to me learning
some Pascal, C, C++, HTML and PHP. Running the BBS was a great
time. I met some really cool people, both online and offline,
through the Austin BBS community. Became friends with someone
named Stimpy, and we played dial-up Warcraft 2 from time to time.
And Viper from local BBS Viper's Den was a pretty cool guy to talk
to about computers. Dano from Falcon BBS held a BBQ where many
more people from the Austin area met up." - Sonic
