Nihilism ======== "Hi, My name is Matt Kelly, I live in San Fran¬ cisco and I run a computer bulletin board system from my home. Basically what that means is that I have my computer hooked up to my phone line and other people with computers and modems can access my database. I run a rather unique system called Nihilism. I attract an offbeat group of callers who share several interests with me. We are all involved in one way or another with the alternative/under¬ ground music scene. Many of us collect records (myself included) and often have a difficult time keeping track of new releases. So what I have devised is a way of keeping several different small and independent record companies catalogs on¬ line. When a person first calls Nihilism they are asked if they would like to log onto the bulletin board system, or if they would like to enter the record catalogs. If they choose to enter the record catalog, they are then given a choice of record catalogs. Currently I list Amphetamine Reptile Records, Alternative Tentacles Records, Subpop Records, Dischord Records, Sammich Records, Lookout Records, Nemesis Records and I’m look¬ ing to add more companies. Each different com¬ pany has their own listings, prices, shipping fees, and of course I try to keep it all up to date. Basically what I’m doing is giving free advertising along the lines of what an underground ‘zine would do. All I’m asking for in return is that your com¬ pany please keep me up to date with releases that are new, in print, and out of print. Of course if you’d like me to do reviews of your releases on the different subboards of my regular BBS system, I’d love to! But I can’t afford to buy them all. I do buy a lot of records, and I review the ones I get. But if you would like to send me records promotionally or even at a discount I would appreciate it. Actually, the reason I’m doing this is not to get free records. More than that, I would just like to be kept up to date with your releases (and so would my users who number more than one hundred all over the US.) I’ve asked them that when they use my online catalog to order your records that they let you know where they got their information. I hope by doing this that we will all benefit. It’s no skin off my nose to do this, so if it helps everyone, that’s great! So one more time I’ll ask you to please put me on your mailing list and send me current catalogs telling me wnat is in and out of print as well as £.ny changes in your shipping and handling policies and costs.
