"This BBS had an interesting feature called "Smurfs". Basically,
you could turn "Smurfs on". If you did, all text sent from the BBS
was sent through a filter which would randomly change words to
"smurf". For example: the phrase, "She went down to the bar and
got smashed" might become "She went down to the smurf and got
smurfed". If you were in an odd mood or just wanted some laughs
(the results could be surprisingly funny!) it was worth trying
