| This is a shockingly explicit attack by the government on the
| right to free speech. Florida has come right out and said that
| they are doing this to punish Disney for expressing a position on
| legislation. If the constitutional right to free speech doesn't
| mean that someone can criticize a law without lawmakers punishing
| them, then what _does_ it mean?

| its an attack on business first of all

| An attack on business is an attack on speech, and shockingly
| the Republican Party has shown itself to be more than happy
| to assault both.
|
| The Democratic Party is not perfect and has a long history of
| this as well, but this instance feels... feral.
|
| I encourage others to vote Democrat for the time being, at
| least they manage to keep populist leaders from commandeering
| the party.

| The populism isn't the problem, its the theocratic
| authoritarianism mixed with a helping of a willingness to
| glorify the oligarchy. Little of what the republican party
| actually does rings of populism except when it crosses into
| one of those other areas. The noteworthy exception being a
| shared anti-intellectual sentiment.

| I'm conflicted.
|
| On the one hand, I dislike everything about the situation.
| Government officials using their power to attempt to hurt
| private companies who disagree with them. The whole narrative
| behind the bill in question is plain stupid on all sides, from
| how it's being described by the political opposition to
| whatever culture battle the bill proposers think they are
| fighting.
|
| But on the other hand, why the heck does Disney have these
| special privileges in the first place? How much have they
| benefited from this special arrangement they were given? I'd be
| interested in an _honest_ accounting of that.

| I'm with you. What's the actual blow by blow here? Do we get
| Disney v. Florida (filed in Florida? California?), which then
| is appealed all the way up to the Supreme Court, and then we
| get what? Supreme Court says Florida violated the First
| Amendment, so Florida is unable to limit an international
| company's territorial holdings (special tax and governance
| arrangement) within the state? Supreme Court says Florida did
| not violate first amendment rights? I'm actually curious as
| to what happens here.
|
| If the situation is different, like Florida withdraws a major
| contract from Disney in retaliation for its stance, is that
| not a matter of the First Amendment? But this is, because a
| swathe of land was gifted to Disney in the 60s? I needs an
| apolitical expert to walk me through this.

| This story is very interesting to me because I don't believe for
| a second that Disney couldn't step on DeSantis if they wanted to
| so I'm just wondering what line he has to cross.

| I wonder about the impact to the county. As a self-governing
| entity, I believe Disney paid for all utilities, roads, etc. in
| the Reedy Creek Development District (I think that is/was the
| name). I have heard that now Orlando County taxpayers will need
| to put up and additional $2,000 or more per resident to provide
| those services.
|
| No doubt this was a political gift to Disney when they promised
| to bring development to the Orlando area half a century ago, and
| Disney certainly fulfilled that part of the deal.

| >the teaching of LGBTQ issues in schools
|
| Errrr what?
| olliej wrote:
| Florida republicans passed a law that makes it a friable
| offense for a teacher to pretty much just acknowledge LGBTQ
| people exist.
|
| Because dehumanizing lgbtq kids keeps them safe.
|
| For example, if you were a male gay teacher, mentioning your
| husband could get you fired.
|
| If you were teaching computer science, and talked about Turing
| machines, mention Turing being gay, or his suicide as a result
| of the forced medication would be grounds for dismissal.
|
| If a gay kid was being bullied by other kids because the
| government was saying gay people are subhuman, addressing the
| bullies and saying gay people are humans too would be grounds
| for dismissal.
|
| Disney stated that it thought dehumanizing kids was wrong. The
| GOP believes treating gay kids as in anyway human should be
| criminal, and is endeavoring to punish Disney.
| macintux wrote:
| Much like "pray the gay away" there's this ongoing idea among
| conservatives that being gay is a choice, so by that
| reasoning kids can be recruited into being gay.
| refurb wrote:
| Have you read the legislation? Because that's not what it
| says at all.
