       | I still think the Dreamcast was my favourite system of all time.
       | Compact, efficient, amazing graphics for its day, networking
       | capable, and a great library of games (although many without well
       | known franchises in the US). Powerstone 2 is to this day my
       | favourite multiplayer fighter/platformer.

         | It felt like such a missed opportunity. It was network capable,
         | but that 'network' was dialup. The Dreamcast launched at the
         | very beginning of the 'broadband' wave and had missed catching
         | it.
         |
         | It was also sadly (in the US at least) against PS2s which could
         | play DVDs; which was also (IIRC) one of the less expensive DVD
         | players of the era.

           | There were two ethernet modules available, a 10M one released
           | in Japan and a 10/100 that was available in the US and I
           | think the rest of the world. Of course, they were costly, and
           | there was the issue of software support; I think most games
           | with modem support didn't support the network adapter.
           |
           | The PS2 and gamecube both had network adapters too, and not
           | much software support (the ps2 network adapter comes with an
           | IDE hard drive interface which opens up interesting
           | possibilities though)

             | I vaguely (I think) remember buying the ethernet adapter in
             | the US on a big sale. And as far as I know it worked great
             | with Phantasy Star Online (I could be misremembering). I
             | suppose it's also possible I was just doing dialup with one
             | of the free providers at the time.
             |
             | You could also buy an official dreamcast keyboard which
             | plugged into the normal controller port which was HUGE for
             | online games at that point since voice chat was non
             | existent. Trying to trade with people using a controller
             | was awful. A keyboard made you amazing at it.
