       | And leaving out the FAANGs from this rule would be blatantly
       | anti-competitive.
       |
       | Looks like Facebook will not only have to exit Europe, but Russia
       | too!

         | vk.ru is the one and only warez site you need in russia... and
         | even in the west. If you lost the files to the font you
         | licensed just search "Fontxyz site:vk.ru" and you get it same
         | goes for basically anything else.

         | My first thought was "YouTube". It's absolutely chock-full of
         | pirated content.

         | Facebook content is not indexed by search engines anyway.

       | This seems like it would be relatively easy to abuse. Throw a
       | bunch of pirate links on your competitor's comment page over a
       | holiday weekend, or something, and suddenly they don't show up in
       | searches anymore.

       | I wonder if that database of censored URLs is floating around
       | anywhere. If you had it you could set up a dark search engine
       | just based on those. Yandex will do all the crawling for you. The
       | Russian mafia has probably thought of this already.

             | Well I know that when I'm searching for say torrents or
             | cracks, Google and DDG (Bing) are absolute trash while
             | Yandex returns useful links to assorted forums. I have no
             | idea how sparse those results have become (heck I can't
             | even read the language most of the time), but I know they
             | continue to have at least some results whereas the western
             | ones seem to have been thoroughly cleansed.

               | I think my response was speaking more broadly about
               | censorship, not just specifically about torrenting.

               | Is that anything besides whataboutism? While I'd love it
               | if our society could straightforwardly rely on
               | uncensorable systems, if two centralized systems censor
               | disjoint sets of material that's a workable state of
               | affairs.
               |
               | Your nit feels analogous to people criticizing Snowden
               | for needing to flee to Russia. Despite Russia engaging in
               | totalitarianism (like every other country), pragmatically
               | they can help us mitigate our own country's
               | totalitarianism. Thus even as a foreigner looking in,
               | it's directly disappointing to see the content cartels
               | firm up their grasp in another sovereign state.

               | Sure! The way you worded your initial response was so
               | broad that it implied that non-Western search engines
               | aren't censored, and all I did was seek to clarify
               | whether or not that was what you were saying. There's no
               | "whataboutism" to simply seeking to understand a
               | statement someone is making, nor do I disagree with the
               | broader sentiment that you make at the end of the post
               | I'm replying to now.

           | That's not really accurate. I have a few modest Indie PC
           | games for sale and I still need to remove dozens of torrent
           | links every few months from Google, often for the same sites
           | over and over again (just with a slight URL variation).
           |
           | Google should just de-list well-known torrent sites
           | completely.
