| Why do they keep releasing new phones reusing the model numbers
| of old phones? Nostalgia angle, I get it, but it's messy.

| This is the 3rd reuse of 6310 i think? I had one and it had a
| b&w screen...

| I really don't want a smartphone, but what I need in a simple
| device like this is a camera for qr code scanning and support for
| 2factor apps.

| 0.3 MP camera in 2021! Why ?
|
| At least put a decent camera. 8 MP one would've been great.
| busymom0 wrote:
| I would have preferred if it didn't have a camera at all.

| Looks like Nokia just called the guys who were designing 3310 and
| told them to make a new phone :)

| Looks like it uses that crappy "S30+" operating system. It would
| be so much better with old S40, but I guess that isn't compatible
| with cheapest bottom of the barrel SoC they are using now...

| I feel they keep missing the point here. New phones with old
| specs that don't even have the positives of the phone they're
| paying homage to.
|
| Bring me an 8310 with 4G, WiFi hotspot and a little e-ink
| display. That's it. Then we're talking.
|
| An opportunity to build a phone that isn't an intrusion on my
| life, and I can supplement with a tablet/smartphone when I need
| it.

| It seems like you're not in the target market for this phone
| then?
| busymom0 wrote:
| Agreed. I would have bought it if it didn't have a camera and
| allowed me to put mp3 files and play them like a music player.
| I basically need a device which doesn't do anything other than
| calling and playing mp3 music.
|
| Also mr sure why they used old 2G when it's being gotten rid of
| in many places.
| zbuf wrote:
| I suppose it's that everyone has their own "just one more
| thing" (in your case MP3 playback).
|
| The best way to not go down that rabbit hole is for the
| device to be a connectivity hub -- a functional device, not
| an entertaining one.
|
| 2G also gives regional differences, which is what already
| renders my 8310 unusable abroad.

| The resemblance isn't as big as the previous remakes IMO.
| Especially because they didn't bother to make a metallic
| grey/silver or grey/gold colour option like the original! Edit:
| Ok the black one comes kinda close to the original 'dark' model
| but even the black/grey was metallic on the orginal.
|
| It's kinda funny that it has only dualband GSM, making it pretty
| useless in most countries now that 2G is being decommissioned.
| For comparison, the original 6310 was tri-band! So the original
| was actually better, after exactly 20 years no less. Even some of
| the other specs are literally the same! 16MB RAM, 8MB storage.
| Yes, MB. In 2021. Really.
|
| And 0.3mpx.. That's 640x480. It's the same as my Kodak digital
| camera from 1999. Lol. They're really going for retro this time.
| I thought the idea was to have the same design with more modern
| specs. Not to have 20 year old specs except with a colour screen
| and a "camera".
|
| Even with those 0.3mpx you can take about 10 photos before the
| 8MB storage is full. Wow. Like, how much does 8 _GB_ flash cost
| these days? Cents??
|
| I really don't understand what market they are aiming this thing
| at. The "I just make calls and text" crowd won't have a use for a
| camera, even a crap one. They'd often not want a camera at all
| (In some cases those are not permitted at work!). The rich retro
| crowd can't use a 2G phone in most countries. Customers in poor
| countries won't care if it's retro because if this is all they
| can afford now, they certainly didn't own a 6310 20 years ago,
| that was pretty much a 'flagship' phone in those days.
|
| I really wonder whether it was even worth the trouble of
| designing it.

| Every new product like this goes through consumer focus group
| testing, after which the likelihood of each feature helping to
| achieve a net profit for the entire device is weighed for
| inclusion. Achieving a good balance is tough, but in the end it
| is all about whether an expectation of profit is strong enough to
| put it out there. In this case, Nokia-HMD would have selected
| options that may not make sense to some HN-type readers. Would I
| buy one if I was looking for only a feature phone? I'd have to
| see a tree-list of all menu items to go along with a seriously
| informative set of specifications. Some competitors to this new
| 6310 run KaiOS, often implemented with teeny hardware controls
| and "too much" rather than "just enough" stuff.
