Ask HN: Who's winning 2030's Turing Award ?
The question is a bit tongue in cheek, but there is a point hidden.
By definition, the Turing Award is meant for long lasting
contribution ; meaning the recipients get their prize a long time
after their work has been done. Which means that, "by
construction", someone is working _today_ on something that will be
a worthy of a prize in the middle of the 2030s. If not "what
people", what topic do you think are candidates ?

| * Distributed computing. There will be more prizes in this field,
| so much has happened beyond the Lamport and Liskov prizes. Large
| scale distributed computing/the cloud has won, and this will be
| recognized in some form. One reason why this might wait until the
| 2030s even though much has happened is that its still an active
| area with much uncertainty. I have my own opinions, but this is
| the surest area that I feel will get a prize of some sort but
| where the specifics of the winner could break in several
| different directions.

| * Software Defined Networking has "won". So it will probably be
| recognized at some point.

| * Type theory. Given the Aho/Ullman prize, it will probably be 10
| years before Programming Languages comes back into the rotation.
| I think type systems have made a lot of progress (linear types,
| dependent types, ...), are still making a lot of impact, and that
| will get recognized in some form. It feels "up next" in the PL
| rotation.

| Its the Nobel price of computing, so I am not sure that a
| specific piece of software or its creators would warrant
| receiving this award. Rather, it's for theoretical
| contributions to the field, e.g. LeCun et Al., for deep
| learning.
