       | I listened to this interview with MeWe CEO Mark Weinstein the
       | other day: https://www.protocol.com/mewe-interview. He shares his
       | thoughts on why he dislikes Facebook so much and how MeWe stands
       | to be different. I was surprised to learn that Sir Tim Berners-
       | Lee is an advisor of the company. I like the positions MeWe is
       | taking. I feel they are approaching social media in the right
       | direction. One of the most important aspects of this is their
       | business model. MeWe is ad-free. They make their money on in-app
       | purchases and a premium subscription service. I also like the
       | fact that feeds are in chronological order and only show content
       | that you actually choose to follow.

       | Why would this network end up any different than facebook once
       | you throw 2 billion users at it? It wouldn't.

       | Hm these networks seem to go nowhere though. 2.5M is nothing
       | compared to facebook.

       | I backed Okuna (formerly OpenBook) but 2 years later it's still
       | work in progress. There's hardly anything interesting on there.
       |
       | The only thing I really see being alive is the Fediverse. Really
       | happy to see that because it's truly open and free. But in the
       | meantime I kinda discovered I'm totally fine without social
       | media. I don't miss Facebook, Twitter, Instagram at all. I just
       | use them for the bare basics now (things that require them). I
       | still like Hacker News and one other forum but that's about it.
       | Oh and LinkedIn but I don't consider it social media. It's more
       | like personal PR, not real sharing.
       |
       | So long and thanks for all the fish!

         | I'm not sure it matters that it's orders of magnitude smaller
         | than Facebook, unless your goal is to replace Facebook with
         | another equivalent behemoth.
         |
         | I think the more interesting question is how big does it need
         | to be to have a self-sustaining community or otherwise to reach
         | "stability". Nothing is forever, but I would guess there are
         | some thresholds where the chance of outright failure drop
         | significantly. I don't know where those thresholds are though.

           | Well the good thing about FaceBook was that everyone was on
           | FaceBook.
           |
           | I'm absolutely _not_ interested in having as many social
           | media apps as I currently have IM apps because everyone likes
           | a different one. This is why I like the Fediverse so much,
           | because they work together.
