Drew Angerer/Getty Images Apple is giving pink slips to more than 600 employees working at offices in California's Silicon Valley, according to filings with the state's Employment Development Department. * This is the company's first big round of job cuts since tech companies started shedding huge numbers of workers after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 614 employees working at eight different addresses in Santa Clara received notice that they were being let go on March 28, according to the filings under the state's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. There are 371 employees being cut at an 3689 Kifer Road office in Santa Clara. The layoffs go into effect on May 27, the filings indicated. Advertisement Article continues below this ad Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on which departments are being impacted by the layoffs, but multiple media outlets reported that many of the laid-off employees worked for the company's electrical vehicle project. Apple reportedly stopped working on the secretive project earlier this year: "The car, which Apple spent billions of dollars researching, had been intended as a rival to Tesla's E.V.s, which include autonomous driving features," the New York Times reported at the time. The Cupertino company had been a notable exception as other tech companies slashed their workforces over the past two years. There was a massive surge in hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people spent more time and money online, and big tech companies are still larger than they were before the pandemic. Still, as growth slows, companies are focusing on cutting costs. In a recent regulatory filing, Apple said it had about 161,000 full-time equivalent employees.
