The company is also letting go of a few dozen Bay Area teachers. * The tech giant is shuttering a child care facility not far from its headquarters in Mountain View and laying off its 73 employees, according to a WARN notice filed with the city on Dec. 8 and obtained by SFGATE on Thursday. WARN notices are required in the event of mass layoffs -- Google also filed three on Wednesday, announcing 364 other layoffs in Mountain View and 266 in Sunnyvale. The layoffs are expected to be permanent, the notices said, and the school is slated to close in August. Losing the day care facility could be a blow for the company's working parents, and for its recruiting efforts -- Google also pared back other perks like tech replacements and office food offerings last year. Company spokesperson Courtenay Mencini told SFGATE that Google will help parents find alternative child care, and that the school had 300 enrollment spots. Advertisement Article continues below this ad The corporate layoffs are expected to begin on March 10, and could come as late as October, the notices said. SFGATE confirmed with Google on Thursday that the company is laying off a few hundred employees each from several teams: design and services, knowledge and information products, core engineering and Google Assistant. 9to5Google, the New York Times and Semafor first reported the layoffs, which potentially totaled more than 1,000 workers. Mencini told SFGATE in a statement that the company was "responsibly investing in our company's biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead," and that teams across the company have been working to become more efficient. "Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally," Mencini said. She didn't say whether there were any further cuts on Wednesday, beyond the formerly reported totals. Google had 182,381 employees at the end of September, according to an October filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The new layoffs come just under a year after Google axed 12,000 employees, making it one of a few tech giants with massive layoff rounds near the end of 2022 and beginning of 2023. Those job cuts helped add momentum to a wave of layoffs that has swept through the industry and the Bay Area over the past year, and so far, shows no signs of ending.
