I think it was Google and Facebook who subcontracted this out to firms who weren't providing real support for their employees who were reviewing explicit content being uploaded to their platforms. I think they ended up offering themselves independently of the contracted firms, but some of the shit they see would be properly traumatising. I'm anti-AI replacing people but the sooner AI can takeover on these tasks, the better. I believe seized data is collected in this database and it's not something you can actually view. Instead it's like a huge repository of 0's and 1's that may resemble the aforementioned topics. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ National_Child_Victim_Identification_Program#:~:text= The%20National%20Child%20Victim%20Identification,for%20the%20purpose%20of%20identifying * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * reply [-]Dependent_Cloud420 10 points11 points12 points 1 day ago (7 children) it's not something you can actually view. This process is called "hashing" and it basically calculates a unique identifier of a file. You can kind of think of it like taking all of the "attributes" of a jpg file (filesize, dimensions, what color is in the 5th pixel from the top left..., etc.) and converting them into a one-way calculatable number/password. Like a jumble of ~64 random number/letter characters as a result. For example, here's a hash for a screengrab from the famous Keyboard Cat video. 7faf24381bb6f43aeb779c3c75b2582478da9bc4 The actual process used is a little more advanced than the one I used to get this hash, but it's the same idea. This isn't a process that can be decoded back into an image file. It's just a unique ID number for each jpg/png that is stored. Given the same image file, the code that generates this ID number will always result in the same ID number for the image, even if it's a different filename. So to compare a suspected image, the system converts said image into that same unique id and checks to see if that id is in the master list. If it matches, authorities can investigate further. Now, there are some flaws in this system: * it only works for images that are cataloged are in the database * it doesn't work for brand new images * there's an infinitesimally small risk of ID number "collisions" that could produce false positives * if an image is resaved, edited, cropped, the ID number would be different But it's a reasonable way to detect people who have copies of known material. Fun fact: this same process is used on the passwords you create on websites to check if the password you type in the sign-in box is correct. 1. One way hash the password during registration and save it in the database. 2. Hash the password during sign-in and then look for it in the database. 3. If it matches, you are allowed to sign in! If not: start the "forgot password" process. Note: there are more advanced ways of detection with AI, but that's beyond the scope of this comment. e.g. "is there a face with black hair and freckles 20% down from the top left corner, and 17% from the left side?" * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * reply load more comments (4 replies) load more comments (2 replies) [-]StealthNideriPhone 13 Pro 10 points11 points12 points 1 day ago (0 children) so Jimmy, what are you doing at your new job as a machine learning engineer for apple? * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * reply load more comments (4 replies) [-]d2mensions 104 points105 points106 points 2 days ago (53 children) Doesn't it already scan photos to sort them by people's faces for example, or dogs/cats. * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * reply [-]L33t_CyborgiPhone 12 Mini 91 points92 points93 points 2 days ago (44 children) Yeah it does. As a parent I'm glad it's there. Recently at my kid's school someone got suspended because they were pressuring other kids to share nudes and they had a WhatsApp group sharing all the photos and making fun of kids. Thankfully no one had blackmailed anyone or anything but it could have been so bad. * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * reply [-]kimbolll 98 points99 points100 points 2 days ago (8 children) Interesting...how do I shut it off? * permalink * embed * save * report * reply [-]ladybugx23[S] 91 points92 points93 points 2 days ago (2 children) This is what I found: "These parental notifications are optional and are only available when the child viewing the photo is under the age of 13. Parents cannot be notified when a child between the ages of 13 and 17 views a blurred photo, though children that are between those ages will still see the warning about sensitive content if Communication Safety is turned on. Communication Safety cannot be enabled on adult accounts and is only available for users that are under the age of 18, so adults do not need to worry about their content being scanned for nudity. Parents need to expressly opt in to Communication Safety when setting up a child's device with Family Sharing, and it can be disabled if a family chooses not to use it. The feature uses on-device machine learning to analyze image attachments and because it's on-device, the content of an iMessage is not readable by Apple and remains protected with end-to-end encryption."
