https://accidentalwoodworker.blogspot.com/2023/08/one-step-forward-another-backwards.html Aug 20 one step forward, another backwards....... I didn't feel 100% today at all. Not feeling sick or blah but more like my normal speed had been slowed somehow. The discharge nurse told that I couldn't go walking until monday so with that in mind my shop day was leisurely again. I thought I would get the jigsaw box done but I hit a glitch with it. That glitch necessitated me buying some goodies to address said glitch. I should have them later next week. I do have some good news. I brought the the frame to the Frame It shop and she called me back this afternoon telling me it would be ready for pickup on tuesday. That surprised me as I was expecting it to be ready at the end of august. So I should be able to get it to daughter #1 before the end of the month. [P8190001] the plan in plain view The box is made from 6mm plywood and it is too thin for the permanent magnets. I will lose about an inch on the interior length but it will still be enough for the jigsaw blades. I plan on putting a magnet holder ass'y on both ends. [P8190002] wee bit too deep I have had my drill press for almost 30 years and I still can't set the depth stop on it. I drilled the mortise for this magnet holder too deep but planed it until it was flush. I need to trim about 3/8" off the height of the pine so I had plenty of waste. [P8190003] flush According to the instructions that came with the magnets, using the magnet holder increases the attraction of the magnet by a factor of 4. The holder has a 1/2" OD and the magnet has a 3/8" diameter. [P8190004] dry fit I cut the magnet holder stock to the pencil line and checked the fit of the lid. I had to plane it a couple of times before the lid seated fully on the box. [P8190006] almost ready I put a screw (#4 x1/2") in the magnet holder so the screw point was facing upwards toward the lid bottom. I put the lid on and the screw marked the center of where I had to drill on the lid. The ends weren't glued in yet but I tried it anyways. The lid fell on without any problems. I felt the magnet's attraction pull the lid down and when I pulled the lid back up it pulled the holders out of the box. I knew that would happen because I hadn't glued them in yet. I glued them in and let them cook while I went to the Frame It shop. [P8190007] no difference Both ends are about the same. When wet they both look as black as the edge of space. When dry they are faded and I can still see the underlying bare wood. Tried something different this time around. I applied the tannic acid and let it dry before I put on the vinegar soup. [P8190008] the glitch I have to secure the jigsaw somehow, some way. I thought of using velcro and I had some but it was a bazillion years old. The adhesive on it had dried out and was toast. I thought of using snap buttons and I ordered some from Lee Valley. [P8190009] no nutso shaking I shook this pretty hard but not like I had pants full of angry bees. It held and that impressed me. I am fairly confident that it should stay on with the normal jostling of the case. [P8190010] wash, rinse, and repeat Flipped the box 180 and tried it again. Both times I did this the box had all the jigsaw blades in it. It held this way too. There isn't a ton of resistance pulling the lid off at least for now. It might get harder for me to do as my arthritis ramps up. [P8190011] broke I glued the holder to the bottom with super glue and accelerator. This combination doesn't break as easily as plain super glue does. Glued the holder back together and when I reinstall it I'll add two more screws to hold it. I took the holder out so I could attach the snap buttons to it. There was no way I was going to be able to do that with still in the case. [P8190012] no comparison The right hinge is stamped out and on the thin side. I does have a built in stop at 90 but it is too small for this case. The left hinges are solid metal and 3 times the size. They don't have a built in 90 stop so I'll have to pick a lid stay that I like. [P8190013] needs some help I had to add filler pieces for the new hinges. [P8190014] putting on the shellac Nixed the paint and went with shellac. I am using the restoration shellac I mixed up a few weeks ago. I was expecting it to be a whole lot more orange but instead it looks almost clear to me. It has a slight yellowish tint to it. [P8190015] side by side The left is the adjustable shelf on the shaker cupboard and it has two coats of store bought clear shellac. To my eye the difference between the two is negligible. accidental woodworker Posted 13 hours ago by Ralph Boumenot 0 Add a comment Accidental Woodworker The daily dribble from my workshop [ ] Magazine * Classic * Flipcard * Magazine * Mosaic * Sidebar * Snapshot * Timeslide Loading
