I don't think I'm romanticizing the 90s internet, but the web today
seems very bland.

The web has become just as monopolized as regular businesses. As soon
as someone thinks of something new, the major site picks it up and so
the smaller sites become lost.

One of the problem that I have with the internet is that so much of
it is just rerouted bullshit. It's blogspam that is cited by blogspam
which finally reaches the major websites.

It is convenient that you can find alot of what you want on one site,
but it was very fun to have to search across a multitude of sites to
find what you were looking for.

Where is the web going? Is it just going to be a handful of websites?
You have myspace and facebook covering pretty much all of the social
networks, Fark and Digg for news rss, and it goes on and on.

Anyone else feeling the same?

I actually like the *chan imageboards and anonymous BBSs like 4-ch
better than "forums", since most of the images (if any) are actually
relevant and purposeful. I hate it when forums and other sites have
literally hundreds of useless little images all over the page like
"spacer.gif" and the like, just to put a shit gradient somewhere or a
little icon that noone will care to look at anyway. There's also the
forums where user signatures and other crap take up more space than
the text of the posts.

I do miss all the badly designed Geocities sites though, those were

If you want to see the awesome Internet, you need to seek out the
minor communities, like *chans, IRC, etc.

as to where the web is going, well, it's going to become more
structured, and blow up again.

let's go back to the beginning of the internet.
You had newsgroups, and a general mess of communities.

Then came AOL, and you see a structured Internet. AOL was the center
of the Internet, and they thought they controlled all of the net. At
some point, threatening non-AOL sites. Then, began the decline, and
we see how people scrambled to their own little communities. Now,
we're back to structured internet. All most people seek are in 5
major sites.

*Wikipedia.org for research/knowledge
*myspace.com for Socializing
*youtube.com for video entertaining
*ebay.com for transactions
*google.com for everything else.

I feel that Google is going to become the next AOL and control most
of people's day to day internet necessities.

Google will eventually crash, and a new big dog will come up.

nor do I have anything against accessibility, or idiot sites like
myspace, but one thing that really pisses me off about Web 2.0 is the
standardized layout and visual style of sites. It's one thing to have
a convenient and intuitive layout, but most of that 2.0 bullshit is
just cumbersome and ugly. Nothing looks like an actual page anymore,
everything is in tiny boxes with round edges, everything is pastel,
everything looks like a Mac.
