May you rest in peace knowing he did so much for aviation. --------------------------------------------------------------------- @ Mister Moochy on Saturday, May 27th 2023 15:10Z By Simon Hradecky on Sunday, May 28th 2023 05:16Z When I met Don, he was with Honeywell. I took a remark in his biography as if Sundstrand Corporation had become Honeywell as quite credible. Now in re-reading after your remarks I found out, that he left Sundstrand and joined Honeywell early in his career. I have updated the text accordingly. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank You Sir By Radu on Saturday, May 27th 2023 18:45Z Chapeau! --------------------------------------------------------------------- J.S. Morrel - Saving Lives By John on Saturday, May 27th 2023 17:58Z J.S. Morrel was another great inventor and this world needs many more. "TCAS and the Irascible Genius Who Invented It: Traffic Collision Avoidance System for Airplanes in Flight" J.S. Morrel spent years refining, defending, and advocating for his life saving Traffic Collision Avoidance System for Airplanes in Flight, or TCAS for short. Unfortunately, it wasn t until 1989, many years after his death, that TCAS became widely adopted and required. TCAS continues to save countless lives using the same basic principles that J.S. Morrel developed. --------------------------------------------------------------------- RIP By Darren on Saturday, May 27th 2023 17:42Z RIP Don . You lived a very worthwhile life --------------------------------------------------------------------- RIP By Ivan on Saturday, May 27th 2023 17:04Z RIP Don, he truly helped aviation and saved millions of lives --------------------------------------------------------------------- Don Bateman, inventor of the GPWS By Mister Moochy on Saturday, May 27th 2023 15:10Z Thank you Mr. Bateman for dedicating your talents and invention to aviation safety. No doubt thousands of lives were saved over the decades by avoiding potential flight into terrain accidents. And it continues today. Just a minor correction: Sundstrand was a leading manufacturer of various aerospace components and systems over many decades. It was purchased by United Technologies in the late 1980s and merged with UTC's Hamilton Standard division and renamed Hamilton Sundstrand. That part of UTC was later renamed or rebranded to UTAS (United Technologies Aerospace Systems), then years later UTC merged with Raytheon, thus Raytheon Technologies was created. I don't believe Honeywell was involved. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Don Bateman By Tom McBroom on Saturday, May 27th 2023 15:04Z RIP Don. It was an honor to know you. --------------------------------------------------------------------- By Chris on Saturday, May 27th 2023 12:49Z Thank you Mr Bateman..Rest knowing that you truly have been a pioneer and a life saver.....Rest Easy --------------------------------------------------------------------- R.I.P. Don By Captain Jim Bigglesworth on Saturday, May 27th 2023 07:07Z The story that as his casket was being lowered into the grave a warning sounded ", PULL UP! PULL UP!" probably isn't true. Vale Don. Well done. --------------------------------------------------------------------- RIP By Levent on Saturday, May 27th 2023 07:00Z RIP Mr. Bateman. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Genius By on Saturday, May 27th 2023 05:02Z A genius and saver of so many lives! Your work with the IATA ACTF and the ACTG will also never be forgotten...Hopefully the trip west that we all must eventually take had blue skies and no turbulence... It was always a sincere pleasure to work with someone who WAS a true safety expert and pioneer instead of the many safety "posers" out here today... --------------------------------------------------------------------- By il maestro on Friday, May 26th 2023 20:25Z I don't know how many lives you exactly saved Don... but I surely know you saved mine, some years ago... thank you. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Three Musketeers of Aviation safety By Miljenko Radic on Friday, May 26th 2023 19:50Z Along with Don Batemen, Primus inter pares ("first among equals") are also dr Theodor Fujita, microburst and windshear and George B. Litchford - TCAS/ACAS. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Luis Alvarez By Richard S on Friday, May 26th 2023 18:51Z Don't forget Luis Alvarez, the Nobel prize winning physicist. He invented the first microwave phased array radar antenna that allowed precision bombing despite clouds during WWII and then he devised Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) which vastly improved air traffic control and aircraft landing in poor visibility conditions. He was personally a lifelong pilot and continued to work on aspects of ILS. --------------------------------------------------------------------- By R flyer on Friday, May 26th 2023 18:39Z I fully agree. RIP, a real contribution to aviation safety. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Add your comment: (max 1024 characters) Your IP address 68.37.28.109 is being tracked.
