The law makes Karnataka one of the most flexible places to work in India. At The state of Karnataka passed an amendment to the laws allowing 12-hour shifts and night shifts for women. Women dominate electronics production lines in parts of Asia, but are underrepresented in the Indian workforce. The legislation limits the maximum workweek to 48 hours, but also increases the number of overtime allowed to 145 over a three-month period from the previous 75 hours. "India will be the next major manufacturing center," said an anonymous Indian government official, "but when we compare India with other countries, we should be very efficient in terms of increasing productivity." Apple and Foxconn win permission for 12-hour shifts and night shifts for women at iPhone production in IndiaFoxconn smartphone manufacturing plant in India India's Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, said last week that iPhones will be manufactured at a new factory in Karnataka. However, Foxconn has not yet confirmed any plans to build the plant. The Indian official said the state of Karnataka has revised its labor laws after listening to "substantial proposals" from Indian industry lobby groups and foreign companies, including Apple and Foxconn. Foxconn and Apple declined to comment. "This is what we and our customers have been striving for," said a person close to Foxconn, referring to Apple. "This adjustment is critical to building an efficient scale production." Foxconn currently manufactures the iPhone at a factory in Tamil Nadu. The company said it will expand its operations in Karnataka and the neighboring state of Telangana. In addition to Foxconn, Apple also manufactures iPhones at the Indian factories of contract manufacturers Pegatron and Wistron.
