Teardown: Cisco 7945 IP Phone, USB 5V Power Modification & Power Consumption Review: Generic 48V 802.3af "Compatible" PoE Injector (XLY-POE-48005) - QSL Cards: Ghosts in the Air Glow (G1TAEG) & High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) Posted on December 4, 2022 by lui_gough This post will be about receiving QSL (reception acknowledgement) cards from Amanda Dawn Christie (VE9OHM), a transmission artist from Canada who was responsible for the "Ghosts in the Air Glow" program. Such experiments occasionally are run for a limited schedule, so it's fun to try and receive the program before it vanishes. This set of QSL cards covers the transmissions of the first movement from March 2019, delayed by both illness and COVID-19 pandemic. The Arrival [svg] Good old "snail mail" - complete with an Air Mail sticker too. How very quaint - the only thing that would complete the look would be an actual stamp, but I guess that's starting to go by the wayside as well. Canada Post prints labels - apparently this letter is dated 15th November and was postmarked by an Australian sorting office on 24th November. Postage was CAD$3.88 or about AU$4.24 (not cheap)! I have no idea what the chevrons mean, but apparently they are not to be covered ... [svg] Inside were four Ghosts in the Air Glow cards, one for each day of reception. [svg] As you can tell, no effort was spared in recording the reception details on these cards. This was a lot more detail than I had expected to be filled on the cards - even one card for all days would have been satisfactory. [svg] [svg] [svg] What was unexpected, was to also receive ... [svg] ... cards from the HAARP facility as well. This facility is very unique in many ways, but has also been the subject of various conspiracies. Regardless, as a bit of a scientist myself, I feel this is a very unique card to receive. [svg] Also, in the same fashion, I received one card for each day ... very generous! [svg] Although, by the second day, I had become "Goug" ... I guess this makes the card even more precious. The effort involved is just amazing and well beyond my expectation. [svg] [svg] In spite of the long wait, I am extremely happy that these did come through in the end and appreciate all of the effort (and postage) that went into it. Conclusion As much as AM shortwave broadcasting is probably on the fringes of being completely ancient-tech for those in the developed world, it's fun to still keep connected the hobby of radio and see it being used for various experiments and artistic means. As much as I hope the world doesn't end up in a place where we have to use shortwave/HF as our sole means of communication (as that usually means something very apocalyptic has likely happened), it's good to know that the underlying physics behind it work, just as they have for centuries. While this card took a while to be made and sent to me, I appreciate it very much as one of the few physical QSL cards that are still being issued in this age that I've been fortunate enough to have claimed. It would have been a gargantuan effort to get QSL cards out for all the listeners for the program - not counting the fact that another movement was just recently broadcast earlier this year. Perhaps there will be another set of cards to arrive ... Bonus: More Unexpected Arrivals As it turns out, I also managed to get another unexpected delivery, this time from element14 for their "Ready for Tomorrow 2022" Sailing Auto-Pilot competition.
