The U.S. has banned electronic equipment from several Chinese
companies including Huawei Technologies, citing data-security risks.

The U.S. government on Friday banned electronic equipment from
several companies based in China, citing national security concerns.

Among the telecommunications and surveillance products banned are
those produced by Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp.  (ticker:
000063.China)

The Federal Communications Commission on Friday said it had adopted
rules banning communications equipment "deemed to pose an
unacceptable risk to national security from being authorized for
importation or sale in the U.S.," according to an FCC press release.
The order applies to communications equipment made by Huawei and ZTE 
. Equipment made by Hytera Communications (002583), Hangzhou
Hikvision Digital Technology (002415.China), and Dahua Technology 
(002236.China), used for purposes like public safety or security of
government facilities was also included.

In a statement, FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel called the rules
"comprehensive."

"The action we take today covers base station equipment that goes
into our networks," Rosenworcel said. "It covers phones, cameras, and
Wi-Fi routers that go into our homes. And it covers re-branded or
'white label' equipment that is developed for the marketplace."

The rules were adopted on Friday, but the change was several years in
the making. In 2020, the FCC called both Huawei and ZTE  national
security threats. The FCC's announcement today puts into action a law
signed last November by president Joe Biden, according to the
release.

Huawei declined to comment. ZTE, Hytera, and Dahua couldn't be
reached for comment. Hangzhou Hikvision didn't immediately comment.
