It's likely Apple is regularly tweaking audio algorithms to improve various aspects, and it's not uncommon for there to be trade-offs where improving one aspect causes a degradation of another aspect. And comparing the test numbers from rtings, you're not going to notice a 1 db drop in the mid bass. A 4db drop in bass, maybe, but it's going to be subtle.
