Power Requirement: +5 VDC (+/-5%), +12VDC (+/-5%) Operating (W): 9.1 (SAS), 7.4 (SATA) Idle (W): 5.7 (SAS), 5.1 (SATA) The processor has a 70 watt TDP, so take that as you will for possible power consumption. The 3 fans on the backwall of OP's photo must be high static pressure fans given how densely the drives are stacked in that chassis, and they look to be 80-92mm in size. I wouldn't be surprised if those pulled 15w each. Your server that idles at 100w.. is that with the drives sleeping/ parked? How many power supplies are you running? How many HBAs? How much ram? How many 10+ gbps NICs? I work for a large ISP, and we are retiring/replacing quite a few 2013 era Netflix OCA caches, and I was offered one. Of course, I couldn't say no I knew that Netflix had wiped them all in the decommissioning process, that they ran FreeBSD, that they were crammed full of drives, and that's about it. All I could find online was overviews, installation/config guides (for their proprietary software), etc. No specs, no clue what was inside the red box. I was pleasantly surprised that all it took was three screws to pop the top off and see inside. Pretty standard Supermicro board Single Xeon E5 2650L v2 (10c/20t) 64GB of DDR3 36x 7.2TB 7200RPM HGST's 6x 500GB Micron SSDs 4x HBAs that I haven't tried to ID yet One 4x 10G SFP+ NIC I expected some resistance when trying to install an OS, but it was already set to boot from USB and took a TrueNAS install like a champ! The whole rig is a little on the loud side, but isn't too bad. I'm definitely going to order four Noctua fans and swap these out. They're all standard fans. Total of 262TB of raw storage. With the age of the drives, I definitely wouldn't run all 36x 7.2TB drives in a single raid z3 volume, but if I did it would be a 240GB volume. I'll probably split it in half and to z3, so I'll have about 15 storage drives to 3 parity drives, times two. I'm open to suggestions here. I'm going to run a full SMART test to be safe, but so far only one drive is failing. I'll definitely pull that drive. Depending on how many are dead/dying, I could either just go without and have smaller arrays, or I could grab a second full server to use for spare parts as this one ages... Mining Chia has been mentioned, and I'm not opposed to it as long as I have plenty of space on a NAS. Heck, if I grab a second unit for spares, maybe I'll just nab 8 of the drives to drop in my primary NAS. 8x 7.2TB drives should be more than plenty of storage for what I actually do. I think I talked myself into it. Get a second unit for spares and to steal drives from for my NAS, mine Chia on the other. Thoughts? Your trying to cool 36 hdd and a hole computer, with only 3 fans, and the bottom row is quad stacked. I tried to replace the fans on a dell blade server and it worked for a little bit but after a few hours it started over heating. As your not going to be running all 36 drives by the sounds of it, I would try and remove like every second drive in the front so the air has a hole hdd space to move through and not being squeezed through the gaps of the hdds. After looking at statistics on https://wintelguy.com/raidmttdl.pl for various configs a while, I'm a lot more comfortable with the likelihood of a data-loss failure. Also, re: Openconnect, having seen a few of their presentations at conferences a lot of their "magic" was in software, IE, they wrote their own kernel changes to do TLS in the kernel so they could do things like zero copy buffers, which is what enables them to work at line-rate (although that may have been for their newer 100gig nodes). I bought a new PC as an excuse for plotting and 180TB worth of overpriced drives as I wanted more anyway and to my surprise Chia paid for it even though I was very late for the party. Chia was worth like $600 at the time, went down to around $200 and now it's $32. It's a rabbit hole but if you're interested here's some info: I'm not up to date with modern plotting software as I don't need them anymore but back then we were talking about generating 15-30 plots (each plot is 100GB) a day on regualr hardware. I think the 5950x could do 40 a day which is around double the multithreaded performance of the 2650L based on a quick search. Generating a plot has various stages with different IO/CPU requirements so generating multiple plots in parallel but with an offset like half an hour was the best method (madmax plotter). There are tools that handle all that now. A single plot needed 256GB of (FAST) storage and 3.5GB RAM. I think using only a HDD it would take like 16 hours for a single plot because of low random access.
