(self.GooglePixel) submitted 18 hours ago by Rskye_Business[klvxk1wggf] Last night my wife and I were driving to dinner and she spotted an altercation occurring on the side of the road between a young male (8-12 maybe) and an adult male. I didn't see it as I was focusing on the road however, but my wife saw it and was immediately concerned as the child looked to be fighting as hard as he could to get away from the situation. She pulled out her Pixel 6, dialled the emergency number in Australia (being 000), and the pixel 6 opened the emergency call screen where it displays your mobile number and location. One major problem though, it never dialled. It was just stuck on the emergency screen with no dial tone and no call being connected. I thought it was user error at first but I pulled over the car and attempted it MULTIPLE times on her phone. NOT ONCE did the call connect to the emergency services. Baffled and in a rush I pulled out my Pixel 6 pro and made the call and handed her the phone as she had all the details of the event. Cops said they were on route and we turned around to see if we could safely intervene to prevent whatever event was going on before they got there. Long story short, the police were actually there before we got back to the scene. Concerned that my significant others phone was not functioning for probably the most important function this device has to perform, I re-tried dialling the emergency number and it was STILL not connecting, just stuck on the page. I tried dialling a normal phone number to see if it was a network related issue and it went through fine, it was just any call to an emergency number!!!! I rebooted the device (which you most likely would not have time to do in an emergency), and then the problem had all but disappeared. HAS ANYONE else had this issue and knows of a fix for it occurring? I have to say, if this happens again, I am selling the phone that day and going back to Samsung. Nothing but problems with our pixels since switching, but this is just not acceptable. Thanks for anyones help! * 100 comments * share * save * hide * report all 100 comments sorted by: best topnewcontroversialoldrandomq&alive (beta) [ ] Want to add to the discussion? Post a comment! This application exists because malicious or just improperly programmed applications can, intentionally or not, block your device from the ability to call emergency numbers. If you are in such a situation, this app helps you to find the culprit - which you then can uninstall (or disable). /u/Rskye_Business could run this on the Pixel. Though it may not show up immediately because rebooting the phone clears these "accounts" out if I remember right (as mentioned in the OP). * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply [+][deleted] 9 hours ago* (3 children) [deleted] [+]bryanthemayan comment score below threshold-12 points-11 points-10 points 8 hours ago (2 children) There's never a situation in which you need an American cop. I've experienced it twice on my pixel 6 and once on my old pixel 3. I think its a result of that new system where it sends emergency services your location. I have to call 000 regularly for work purposes, hence why I've encountered it so many times. A restart fixes it but you better hope you're not dying or anything... I tried to escalate to Google numerous times and they genuinely did not care. I posted a thread on here about it once too. Honestly I think it's time to get a group of people together who've experienced it. Collate all our material and go to a media outlet with a tech focus to try and highlight it. Also fuck the barstards in here who think it's funny or that people are just whining etc. Being able to call 000 is vital and as someone that deals with them regularly, every second can count. You shouldn't have to spend ages troubleshooting or restarting just to call for help. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]privilegejunkie 46 points47 points48 points 10 hours ago (0 children) Causing a public shitstorm online seems to be the only way companies will listen to you. The FCC could stop sale of the devices, and force google to fix the issues before restarting sales. But that would require the FCC to have sufficient resources and funding. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]Expensive_Finger_973 13 points14 points15 points 8 hours ago* (0 children) Unfortunately for the way Google tends to operate most people are probably not going to have much tolerance for buggy things like a cell phone that can't make a phone call, doubly so in an emergency. And rightly so. A reputation like that will be like kryptonite to the success of Googles hardware business. Everything everyone bitches about hating from other OEMs (bloat, bootloader locking, lack of timely updates, etc) will mean nothing that time they need to get in touch with someone in an emergency and the Pixel fails to perform. And that is a customer Google will likely never get back given the nature of how the product failed. The Pixel brand will forever be associated with that panic filled emergency in a negative way for that person. And probably for anyone they tell about it later albeit to a lesser degree. Even for a company that tends to not spend much time interfacing with customers it would be wise to keep up with and be out in front of those sorts of issues. From a PR perspective if nothing else. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]I_Am_SkipplesPixel 3 64GB 29 points30 points31 points 11 hours ago (0 children) Yeah shit like this, where the basic functionality of the fucking phone doesn't work just randomly, is why I'm done with pixels * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]T-Rax 2 points3 points4 points 5 hours ago (0 children) What kinda company is Google?! I've had to call emergency services twice off my Pixel 6 and using 112 both times I've not had issues. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]ishzlle 3 points4 points5 points 7 hours ago (3 children) AFAIK there's no difference. An emergency call in GSM is a separate thing from all other calls and is handled separately, whether you dial 112, 911, 999 or 000 doesn't matter. This is also how your phone is able to send your location along when you place an emergency call. * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply [-]davwheat 1 point2 points3 points 6 hours ago (2 children) You're completely right. As part of various info your phone and the cellular networks exchange when attempting to connect, your device is sent a list of emergency calling numbers. This tells your phone which numbers you call should be interpreted as emergency calls and which shouldn't. 112 is often universally aliased to the local emergency number, and included on that list. Also, 112 doesn't use the strongest signal available regardless of the carrier. It will continue to use the network you are already connected to, if you are connected to one. Otherwise, it will then use the strongest signal from any other carrier, and traverse through the list of carriers until an attempted call connects successfully. In some countries, emergency calls on other networks still isn't a thing, though. It was only implemented in the UK in 2010. That being said its a "use at your own risk" device. No matter what these companies say You should not depend on it. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]Richard_TMPixel 5a 33 points34 points35 points 10 hours ago (1 child) Nah, not being able to use the emergency number is probably a lawsuit-worthy offense. Everyone should be able to access that number at all times. You don't even need service to call the emergency number. All service providers (at least in America) make all their towers freely available for use on emergency calls. Even if you don't have a service provider and your phone otherwise cannot do ANYTHING, you can still call the emergency number. It's the ONE thing you should be able to depend on with a phone. * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply [+]WackyBeachJusticePixel 6a comment score below threshold-7 points-6 points-5 points 9 hours ago (0 children) Maybe the should get a lawsuit going then, maybe it'll make Google do something about it. * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply [+][deleted] 11 hours ago (3 children) [removed] [-]TheRoadKing101Pixel 6 Pro 3 points4 points5 points 10 hours ago (0 children) * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]Smply_RcklessPixel 6 Pro 10 points11 points12 points 11 hours ago (0 children) How much does google pay you an hour ? We once got a report of a 911 glitch and immediately executed a "stop ship". Which is stop the factory, and stop shipping phones unless the problem was resolved. The problem with 911 is that the phone does take special action (like connect to any tower regardless of subscriber status), and these code paths don't get as well tested for obvious reasons. Still no excuse. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply * about * blog * about * advertising * careers * help * site rules * Reddit help center * reddiquette * mod guidelines * contact us * apps & tools * Reddit for iPhone * Reddit for Android * mobile website * <3 * reddit premium * reddit coins Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.
