The 2022 Oder environmental disaster is a mass die-off of fish, beavers and other wildlife in the Oder river in Poland and Germany, causing a health and environmental crisis in large parts of the country and subsequently a political scandal. [ ] Contents * 1 Discovery * 2 Testing * 3 Implications * 4 Reaction * 5 References Discovery[edit] On 11 August 2022, volunteers and anglers removed at least 10 tonnes of dead fish from the 200-kilometer stretch of the river north of Olawa in southwest Poland.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5] The discovery was made by local fishermen, as opposed to any regulatory or testing body.^[6] Overhead images of the river showed the unprecedented scale of the damage.^[7] Testing[edit] It was suspected early on that the cause of the disaster was poisoning by an unknown toxic substance.^[8] Water samples taken on 28 July showed a high probability that contamination was caused by mesitylene, although this was not present on samples taken after 1 August.^[9]^[2] A German testing lab had found traces of mercury,^[10] but the Polish government denied the cause as mercury poisoning and claimed their tests had found no such thing.^[11] German laboratories believe this may have been the result of a large amount of salt in the water.^[ clarification needed]^[12] Implications[edit] The ecosystem of the river was severely damaged and possibly, in the case of mercury poisoning, irreversibly wiped out.^[13] There are also potential serious health consequences for humans.^[14] Reaction[edit] The Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki was put under pressure to act and fired several top government officials as a result.^[15] This in turn has caused internal rifts in the ruling Law and Justice party.^[16] Local residents angrily reacted to the government actions,^[17] and, with the state television avoiding reporting on the subject, widespread allegations of a government cover-up began.^[18]^[19] The Polish government said the perpetrators would be severely punished, also blaming opposition politicians such as Donald Tusk and Rafal Trzaskowski, and compared the situation to other previous unrelated events in Warsaw and Gdansk, where the opposition Civic Platform hold power.^[19] Grzegorz Witkowski, a government minister, as well as repeating the government claims, also blamed ecologists and stated that the river is safe to enter.^[20] Criticism also fell on the local sheriffs.^[16] Anglers have stated that it is unlikely they would ever be able to fish again in the water.^[21] Steffi Lemke, the environment minister for Germany, called the situation a catastrophe and a shocking ecological disaster.^[22] References[edit] 1. ^ Auto, Hermes (11 August 2022).
