They design a phone based on BOM with cheaper parts (mostly) and then design software without thinking how people would use the software. Their software is buggy because they don't test the hardware properly based on every usual use case scenario (fully test based on all type isn't possible in short time with little investments) not because of actual logic bug/security vulnerability in codes. Their software developer wrote great codes. If that were the case no one would have bought the iPhone 12 family of devices when they were announced in September 2020 when everything was still locked down. "Due to its use of 60 GHz frequency bands, Google was required to obtain specific regulatory approval for the radar system in all countries that the Pixel 4 is being sold. As such, the feature is geoblocked if the device is detected to be in an unsupported country. On launch, Google stated that support for the feature was currently limited to Australia, Canada, "most European countries", Singapore, Taiwan, and the United States. "media outlets noted that civilian use of the 60 GHz frequency is prohibited in India, unlike in the U.S. and some other countries, where it is considered unlicensed spectrum." So that was a problem with soli along with the fact the cost was too high to put in subsequent devices that were priced in the low-mid range (4A, 4A (5G), 5) They could have put it in the pixel 6 pro but that device would have been priced even higher if that were the case. A lot of users & reviewers thought soli overall was a gimmick with the hand gestures. Some of the things google demonstrated overall in the keynote for the pixel 4 did not translate well during real life use. I have been critical of pixel pricing since google created the pixel series because they are trying to fake it to make it. Both Samsung & Google are nowhere near quality & finish where they should be for what either charge at launches. After 5 years of Apple gouging they finally woke up with the 6 (non-pro). The problem: google cut 1 too many corners with the optical fingerprint sensor. After 10 years I bailed on #teampixel #teamandroid #teamgoogle After watching the reviews of the 6 fingerprint sensor I made the choice to go nuts and buy an expensive iPhone. If I don't preorder it now, I probably won't be able to buy it in the future. The 5a was never available here. The pixel 4a can be bought from time to time through obsucre sellers at a price more expensive than what I bought mine for at release. The pixel 6 is still available for EUR649. I can't be sure if the pixel 6a will be available here in the near future. I can't be sure the next pixel a will ever be available here. I don't want a phone that is bigger or more expensive. Each time I read about any other brand, I prefer the pixel for lot's of reasons. So I want to find out if the 6a will be as good as my 4a, before I (pre)order. The only issue I have found so far is that there is no 5G here because pixels can only use 5G in countries where google sells them officially. But I doubt 5G will be of any use in the next few years. Maybe in the future google will pay the local mobile phone carriers to allow the use of 5G, because google sells phones in all the neighbouring countries. I don't get the point of those 120 hz displays. Some reviewers claim the pixel 6a has (over)heating issues some claim it doesn't. My pixel 4a gets hot from time to time too, for instance when using android auto wirelessly (I have to disconnect android auto from my car when I don't use it or it gets noticeably hot in my pocket and the battery drains fast). Sounds like a similar issue with the 6a. I like the pixel 6a for it's better android compared to brands like samsung, getting android updates on release, it's camera that's as good as most of the best phone camera's and it's smaller size. It's kind of hard to make a one-to-one comparison as each company has its own business model. Coca Cola doesn't make money off fountain drink machines, they make money off the syrup subscriptions. The first nail gun my father bought had a free lifetime repair policy because there was only one kind of nail that could be used in it, so the company saw the value in taking away reasons for their customers to buy another brand of nail gun once their first one broke, because you'll only sell a few guns, but you can sell a shitload of nails. And just because Google is small in the realm of phone manufacturing doesn't mean that they can't make quality products, largely because these phones get built in the same factories that Samsungs and iPhones get built in. These companies all contract all around the world for production, so it's not like Google just decided one day to relegate a portion of the marketing team to a factory making phones as was glibly implied by the first person I was responding too. They put together a plan of what they wanted to see in a phone and then they spoke with the actual industrial manufacturers and came up with a design and a plan and then they implemented it just like any other phone company does. So I guess that is the point I am making. Google wants Samsung to apply android the best way possible (this will never happen as long samsung pushes their own shitty apps & services) Google asks for Samsung's help with pixel 6. Samsung gives them their shitty 5G modem from 2019. Tensor is manufactured in a Samsung foundry with a subpar process compared to TSMC where all Apple chips are made and this year qualcomm is going back to them for their chip production. Tensor is a google modified exynos SoC borrowed/given (depending on how you look at it) from Samsung. Every year google makes changes to android. Every year google "nudges" their oem partners to implement those said changes. Every year samsung shrugs their shoulders and says "sure" Google nudged their partners for RCS for years; samsung, other oems, carriers, etc. google got angry and said screw this and implemented it straight into messages....but guess what, if their carrier partners aren't implementing it in the google specific way (there are multiple paths for RCS) on their end it doesn't matter. Carriers in the US push their own communication apps just like android oems do to control data and possibly profit off of it. That's how we end up with bloatware: a 3 way race to the bottom between google, oems, & carriers. Google has had to make financial deals with Samsung to get the their messages app pre-installed on all their devices. Google had to make a deal with Samsung to allow android developers to put the same apps in the play store into the galaxy App Store. There are other compromises I won't get into for the sake of this posts character size. Google & Samsung are humongous companies with multiple divisions that are always at war internally & externally. Android outside of the US is overwhelmingly #1 so google is content with the way things are. For android to become dominant in the US both Samsung, Google, & Qualcomm need to come together and realize each other's strengths combined can produce a superior experience to the iPhone. It will never happen. Oneplus, Motorola, Asus, Sony, Nothing, anyone else would no longer be able to bundle google apps because Samsung would forbid it. Qualcomm would have to become exclusive to the Samsung/android partnership The partnership would tell the carriers to go fuck themselves, pull a Steve Jobs "it's our way or the highway" The carriers would respond with a partnership with all the ex google bundled oems and they would all use mediatek in their devices. Since base android is AOSP it would be weaponized by T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon with their own app stores or the individual oems would do the same or both....it's a toss up. Google created this mess because in the beginning of android they were not a hardware company & they were not a software company. They were an internet search company. HTC made nice devices but they were not competitive enough against Samsung. HTC was late with phablet sized devices and their interface devolved over time. Samsung is a vertically integrated company. And I hold the bottom half of a phone so the location of the rear scanner isn't right. I don't put my finger there when pulling it out of my pocket and the fingerprint scanner gestures were hard to pull off for the same reason. But I agree that the fact that you have to wake the screen first to use the in-display scanner does suck. Not that big of a deal with double-tap to wake, but google doesn't have that. They only have AOD which a lot of people don't like, lift to wake which is so aggressive it'll just wake up on its own if your desk wiggles by 0.1 millimetres, or a single tap to wake which is also way too easy to trigger accidentally. I put my Pixel 6 Pro for Sale and got me a VIVO X80 Pro and the fingerprint scanner on this thing is the best on any phone I've tried yet. It works 100% of the time and what's more surprising is the way you register your fingerprint, just one hard tap with your finger and it's done, no need to keep trying to scan multiple times to get your entire fingerprint at different angles.
