Boeing's Starliner spacecraft will once against make an attempt to reach the International Space Station in a critical test flight that will determine whether it's finally ready for manned missions. NASA and the private space company have scheduled the launch for today, May 19th, with an instantaneous launch window at 6:54PM Eastern Time. The Starliner will launch on top of a United Launch A lliance Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral, and you can watch the coverage for the event in the video below or through the NASA Live website starting at 6PM ET.

During its first test flight back in December 2019, Starliner made it into orbit but failed to reach the ISS. An automation system incorrectly assessed the timing of the flight and prevented the spacecraft's thrusters from firing when needed. NASA and the company investigated what had happened, and reports came out a few months later that Boeing didn't conduct launch-to-docking simulations on the spacecraft before its failed launch.

I'm pleased to be sharing a project that I have been working on for a while and have been thinking about doing for even longer. FeedMail is a simple service that aims to get updates from your favourite websites to your email with no fuss and no nonsense.

How FeedMail Works

FeedMail works using a set of technologies informally called RSS. FeedMail actually supports a variety of feed formats including Atom, RSS2 and RSS1. These feeds are created by websites and updated whenever new content is posted. FeedMail subscribes to thes e feeds on your behalf and forwards new entries to the email address of your choice.

Many websites support these feeds. Just post the URL to an article or website that you want to subscribe to and FeedMail will show you the available feeds. For example the following websites support RSS:

FeedMail has never had a user-configurable update rate option. This is because it never made sense to us. Why would you want anything but the fastest option? Update rate also isn't really a user-facing concern, it is more of an implementation detail. Users don't care how polling works, they just want to get their news. By keeping this decision internal it gives us the flexibility to introduce features such as instant updates via WebSub without requiring users to manually update their feed configuration.

We've recently made another improvement by reducing our poll rate limit from 15min to 5min. No action required on your part, your feeds are already updating faster. This means that you will get your updates three times faster for feeds that allow it. We have also adjusted the poll rate we use when feeds don't specify anything from 1h to as low as 5min for fast feeds.

Th e effect of these changes is significant. Excluding WebSub feeds (which are always updated in real-time). Over 1/4 of feeds...

These are some technical tips for publishing a blog. These have nothing to do with good content, just how to share that content. The recommendations are roughly in order of importance and have rationale for why they are that important.

Formats

People generally call feeds "RSS Feeds" but usually they aren't specifically talking about RSS. RSS isn't the only, or even the best format. Using a standardized format is critical to your feed being understood by the widest variety of readers and search engines.

You should use RSS 2 or Atom. These formats are very widely supported. Other common formats are earlier RSS standards and JSON Feed or Microformats h-feed. I would avoid using these--or even less common formats--as they are less widely supported.

If you don't have a feed yet I would highly recommend Atom. The specification has much less ambiguity, so you are less likely to have compatibility issues with the wide variety of clients in use. The specification is also simpler and more clear overal...

Running a feed reader is an interesting business. One of the more interesting problems I have seen is this "DoS" from Google's WebSub Hub.

This is a graph of WebSub pings for a single feed, The Chromium Blog. This blog appears to be powered by Blogger.

This isn't a ton of traffic, the peaks hover around one request every 10s. However, it adds up when the bursts run for days.

The number of entries in the ping varies and is bimodal. It is usually around 20 (Blogger appears to keep 25 items in the feed) but often 1 or 2. Occasionally it is somewhere in the middle. In general WebSub hubs will remove already-delivered entries from the feed. However, in this case all the items are previously seen. (Maybe they ar e modified? I don't have metrics for this yet.)

Most of the bursts start because a new entry is posted. Some bursts start with no clear trigger. I have yet to see a post that doesn't have a burst associated. These bursts then continue until the WebSub subscription expires.

A bill that would break up Google's advertising business if it becomes law has been introduced in the Senate. The Competition and Transparency in Digital Advertising Act, which has support on both sides of the aisle, would prevent companies that process more than $20 billion in annual digital ad transactions "from participating in more than one part of the digital advertising ecosystem," as The Wall Street Journal reports.

Google easily falls under that distinction. It generated $54.7 billion in ad revenue last quarter alone. While other companies meet the dollar-figure threshold of the proposed rules, Google has a hand in many aspects of the advertising process. It runs an exchange where ad networks bid on inventory. It also offers tools to help companies buy and sell ads.

A House of Representatives version of the legislation is also expected to be introduced imminently. If the bill becomes law, Google would have to exit some of those businesses. It would have a year to comply with the ...

Most chemical research is based around making molecules that improve human health, or the environment, or energy and electronics - among other things.

But sometimes, chemists want to make molecules that are simply geometrically interesting. Creating these molecules is a technical challenge - but it can lead to breakthroughs in all the other fields. When soccerball-shaped "Buckyballs", for instance, were turned into carbon nanotubes, the discovery sparked a revolution in materials science.

Now a team of Japanese chemists have made a molecule shaped like a Mobius strip. The molecule is a round belt of carbon atoms, linked to each other in hexagon shapes (like graphite) - and called a carbon nanobelt. The researchers have figured out how to make the belt with a twist, so that it only has one surface.

Twitter is taking more steps to slow the spread of misinformation during times of crisis. The company will attempt to amplify credible and authoritative information while trying to avoid elevating falsehoods that can lead to severe harm. Under its new crisis misinformation policy, Twitter interprets crises as circumstances that pose a "widespread threat to life, physical safety, health or basic subsistence" in line with the United Nations' definition of a humanitarian crisis.

For now, the policy will only apply to tweets regarding international armed conflict. It may eventually cover the l ikes of natural disasters and public health emergencies.

The company plans to fact-check information with the help of "multiple credible, publicly available sources." Those include humanitarian groups, open-source investigators, journalists and conflict monitoring organizations.

Monitoring plant biodiversity from space using satellite data will soon be feasible, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Communications.

New ways to accurately and efficiently monitor biodiversity are increasingly important to support efforts to protect and restore ecosystems affected by climate change and other threats. Many current biodiversity monitoring techniques require sending humans out into an environment to collect samples and data, making monitoring expensive and labour-intensive.

A team led by Anna Schweiger from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and Etienne Laliberte from the University of Montreal, Canada, has demonstrated that a key measure of plant biodiversity can be gleaned by analysing data collected by Earth observation satellites. The new observation was a magnitude 5.0 marsquake that occurred on May 4, nearly an entire order of magnitude more powerful than the largest one previously observed, which was magnitude 4.2.

That's important, because InSight's primary task is to use seismic waves from such quakes to probe the Martian interior, all the way to the core, and the bigger the quake, the better.

"So, even as we are getting close to the end of our mission, Mars is giving us great things to see and add to the data record," the mission's principal investigator, Bruce Banerdt, said at a recent press conference.

A simple but reasonable definition of inequality says that moving any part of a distribution toward its median value reduces the inequality in that distribution. Moving a part away from the median value increases inequality.

The median adult income worldwide is ~$1000 ($3000 per household), and median wealth is $7500. If you make/have more than those amounts, and if you are trying to increase your personal income and wealth, then if successful your efforts will increase inequality in those distributions. The same applies for any distribution where you are above the median; your efforts to increase your personal value are efforts to increase inequality.

Thus you are trying to increase inequality if you try to increase your number of Twitter followers but have more than 200 now. And that's compared to other people on Twitter. Compared the the median human, even going from zero to one Twitter followers increases inequality.

Physicists estimate that the Big Bang was around 13.8 billion years ago. Not long after the Big Bang, massive clouds of mostly hydrogen gas known as Damped Lyman-a systems (DLAs) slowly began condensing into the first stars. Large enough groups of stars and other matter would coalesce to form galaxies.

DLAs act as galactic nurseries and can be observed today. In research just published by an international team in Nature, the results of a new method for detecting DLAs are presented. The technique involves a novel instrument and a little help from the universe itself in the form of a funky consequence of Einstein's Theory of General Relativity.

The existing method for observing DLA clouds uses quasars as a stand in for a kind of cosmic "backlight". Quasars are supermassive black holes that emit gamma radiation.
