I was very excited because it was my dream job, and I would have a chance at the H1B lottery and a position in Canada if I was not selected. I declined an offer I had received from another major tech company that had also offered me a chance at the H1B lottery. I also canceled ongoing interviews with other companies and ended my job search. 3 months ago, I started an internship to prepare myself as a junior Software Development Engineer, building web apps using Rails. 1 month ago, I was not selected in the H1B lottery but, thankfully, I was told that I would be moved to a Canadian role. 3 weeks ago, I was told that I would receive a new offer letter with the Canadian role. Now, I need to look for a job immediately. I'm sharing this experience because I am looking for a Software Development Engineer role that can sponsor a Canadian work visa. Please let me know if you know of any opportunities for which I am a good fit. Thank you, Meta, for recognizing my ability. This opportunity may have fallen through, but I will never lose my technical skills and passion in computing and programming. * 15,529 763 Comments Like Comment Share * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter Cylia Wang 1d * Report this comment Don't you have a 3 year OPT due to the STEM major? It is the EB1-A. I was lucky enough to get my green card in less than a year. I'm hiring like many others and may be able to put something together that addresses your needs and that of my company. I know you'll land on your feet well. Just remember that despite this setback your skills are in demand. Like Sign in to like this comment Reply Sign in to reply to this comment 1 Like J. According to Schedule B of the NAFTA agreement regarding employment, a Canadian passport holder does not need to complete a lottery in order to receive a work visa here in the United States. There may be "sponsorship" but it is lottery-free - you just need the offer. It's my understanding that all you need to do is present your offer letter to any US consulate / border entry. That's how all the Canadians are able to work on Wall Street for example, as "economist" under Schedule B. And they renew these year after year. This is not legal advice but my understanding. Joy L. Since you're Canadian, have you looked into an TN-NAFTA? That's typically the easiest way for a Canadian to get a job in the US (for reference: I am Canadian and was in a similar boat). If you're open to working in Canada I can ask around there too. If Meta was willing to hire you, you must be a top class engineer! I actually cover hiring for SWE for our Canadian market at Lyft. We have a number of roles open across Montreal + Toronto for backend work. If you're open to discussing these opportunities, we can definitely do a deep dive on sponsorship eligibility :). Either way, best of luck in your job search! I hope you find the right fit! I received much attention, encouragement and referrals in a single day, which I never expected. I appreciate everyone who offered me warm support in the past 3 days when I had to face the cold reality. Your empathy and kindness are priceless. I also want to thank Meta employees who helped me out. You care about people and you care about the company. I was going to move on and never expected that this would happen. It's finals week so I want to focus on my schoolwork first and then plan for the next steps. fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10 1,652 74 Comments Like Comment Share * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in Joy L. graduate student in CS @ SFSU, open to full-time SDE opportunities 2d * Report this post https://lnkd.in/gRjSusxE Dijkstra's Algorithm for Shortest Paths Problem | Visualization https://www.youtube.com/ 21 Like Comment Share * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in Joy L. graduate student in CS @ SFSU, open to full-time SDE opportunities 1w * Report this post Is melody a type of algorithms? Thanks Rivian for offering me the opportunity to start over. I appreciate it since the first job is usually the hardest one to get, especially for people who change majors. I will miss my team and am looking forward to the day that we can sit down and eat lunch together. #internship #softwareengineer 73 5 Comments Like Comment Share * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in Joy L. graduate student in CS @ SFSU, open to full-time SDE opportunities 9mo * Report this post Rivian 361,312 followers 9mo A team of dedicated engineers is building our Over-The-Air (OTA) updates technology, enabling us to continuously improve the experience for every owner.
