Problem I think it's no secret that the state of the web nowadays is a mess. One annoyance that has made the web nearly unusable on many websites is those big banners that they show you about their cookie policy. This is because of some EU regulation with good intentions and poor implementation. On desktop, you can use an extension called "I don't care about cookies", but on mobile you're left without options. Especially on iOS, you can't even install the most basic extentions on Chrome or Firefox (but that's another story). The result? The cookie banners take up huge real estate on mobile screens that it's virtually impossible to read the content without interacting with the banner. Worse yet, if you want to disable cookies, that option is almost always hidden behind somethig called "cookies preferences". But is it the end of story? Hell no! When you tap on "cookies preferences", a new page shows up while the "essential" cookies radio button is grayed out. So you basically cannot opt out of shady cookie collections anyway. [0] My Solution You know what? Screw any website that collects cookies (even Medium does that, but for now, I'm stuck with it...). So now I have decided to close any non-essential website that does this crap. Am I missing something? Maybe. For example, there was an article on HN today that linked to fleksy.com which showed a huge cookie banner on my phone. Between learning about how swipe key works (the content on their website) and saving myself from having to tap on small buttons to close the banner, I chose the latter. I think if more people did that, websites would be forced to avoid using cookies in such a way that necessitates a cookie prompt. PS: I originally posted this on HN, but for some reason it got flagged which is ironic, because HN doesn't collect cookies.
