I have been there for a year. Last year my company appointed a new CEO after I started and let me just be frank, he is a fucking asshole. I swear he has an open disdain for his employees, and he yells at them over Zoom, talks to them like children, and in general has a smug and demeaning tone. I don't think I have heard anyone say anything good about him, but that's who the board wants. Right now he is sitting at a 20% Glassdoor rating. For comparison sake, Vince McMahon, a guy who literally made his employees kiss his ass on international television on multiple occasions, is at 50%. Even Glassdoor reviews that give the company 5 stars give the CEO bad ratings. With that, we have lost a lot of good people. Like, a third of engineering including 2 CTO's in 6 months and other management. We have even turned over our executive VP, CFO, and head of HR (yeah...). The company's solution was to mass hire to make up for the losses. With the market being super hot, developers are keen to weed out companies with ratings like this. The result is that we have had to scrape the bottom of the barrel with new hires. Our interviews and assessments are now easier, we are hiring managers who are sub par and don't fit in, we are hiring job hoppers who have 3 month tenures at several companies, and we are starting to outsource work for the first time ever and train folks who barely speak English. So my question is, am I over thinking that this will have any negative impact on my career or is this a textbook example of the Dead Sea Effect? Or do I just need a reality check that none of this shit is normal or OK? * 182 comments * share * save * hide * report all 182 comments sorted by: best topnewcontroversialoldrandomq&alive (beta) [ ] Want to add to the discussion? If you simply explain that you have a very secure job at the moment, but because you are unhappy with the high turnover and new management you are just now starting to have a look at the market to find a better employer to stay long-term with, you have all the power. * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply continue this thread [-]MakingMoves2022Looking for job 2 points3 points4 points 2 hours ago (2 children) They might even offer you a higher salary because they feel sorry for you ;) I highly doubt that. Maybe not "here, look at my CEO's rating on Glassdoor". But if someone I was interviewing said to me "I want to leave this job because its leadership went down the drain. There's been massive attrition of top talent, and things aren't improving." I would totally understand that. Generally speaking, as long as your resume doesn't have too many unexplained stints shorter than 2-ish years, I don't see job hopping as a red flag. Emphasis on "unexplained", because there are many, many valid reasons for leaving quickly, including "my CEO is an asshole." With that, we have lost a lot of good people. Like, a third of engineering including 2 CTO's in 6 months and other management. We have even turned over our executive VP, CFO, and head of HR (yeah...). The company's solution was to mass hire to make up for the losses. This is objectively bad. It's also not as uncommon as it should be. But generally speaking hiring managers aren't going to ding you for being around when it happens. * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply [-]Godfather_v 1 point2 points3 points 3 hours ago (0 children) Why don't you name the company * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply [-]Optimal_Cell_6923 -4 points-3 points-2 points 34 minutes ago (0 children) its post like these that make me hate these shetty techies ur whining about working 20 hours a day in ur cush job with free food henti body pillows and jerk off stations with pomstars u dont have to work paycheck to paycheck dig ditches or go to bed hungry some ppl would do anything to be in ur shoes u should have gratitude u r so overpaid in tgis bubble market getting paid way more than nurses an they save lives and actually help the world not destroy with with divisive trump antivax anti american police brutality propaganda * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply [+]Specialist-Reply8273 comment score below threshold-13 points-12 points-11 points 2 hours ago (3 children) its post like these that make me hate these shetty techies ur whining about working 20 hours a day in ur cush job with free food henti body pillows and jerk off stations with pomstars u dont have to work paycheck to paycheck dig ditches or go to bed hungry some ppl would do anything to be in ur shoes u should have gratitude u r so overpaid in tgis bubble market getting paid way more than nurses an they save lives and actually help the world not destroy with with divisive trump antivax anti american police brutality propaganda * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply [-]fame2robotz 4 points5 points6 points 1 hour ago (1 child) My workplace doesn't have free henti body pillows and jerk off stations and it's FAANG, wtf. But the CEO is likely their bosses boss, etc, so there's not much they can do about it. It's up to the board of directors to fix this. If I were you I would decline the offer, keep sharpening up my interview skills and try to get an offer from a healthier environment and one with good talent where you can learn more from and actually advance your career not just monetarily but set you up for better future jobs. Project management will be terrible. Your co-workers will have a stream of awful non-sensical proposals (re-write the back-end in Javascript! Microservices! If they have less than 18 months at the company, I really want to know why they're leaving because I don't want to be left holding the bag when they decide to leave me in a year. There are tons of good, reasonable answers to this question though so it's definitely not a dealbreaker. * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply [-]2l_throwaway 4 points5 points6 points 2 hours ago* (5 children) I don't want to be left holding the bag when they decide to leave me in a year...There are tons of good, reasonable answers to this question I've heard/read this perspective a lot and it is so interesting to me. You're right that there are tons of good, reasonable answers as to why someone left their job in under 18 months. But I'd argue beyond that--almost any answer is a good, reasonable answer. Even something as simple as "I wasn't enjoying the job anymore" is a perfectly valid reason. The only bad reason is no reason. But no one leaves a job for no reason. There always is a reason. And if that reason isn't perceived as "good enough," that just means you think loyalty to the company should outweigh it. Or, if not loyalty, then what you're really filtering for is a preference for no change, or risk aversion (i.e., do nothing, stay in the same place) over change/risk tolerance. I guess that's rational from a hiring perspective, but it's just kind of crazy to think about how "job hopper" has such a widely negative connotation when all it really means is "more change/risk tolerant," which is not inherently a bad thing in any other area of life. For hiring, though, we want people with a healthy dose of fear of change--i.e., "stability." * permalink * embed * save * parent * report * give award * reply [-]MordredKLB 4 points5 points6 points 2 hours ago (2 children) As a manager I want to hire people that are good at their job obviously, but also bring in purple who will provide stability to the team. People will say "well, why didn't you choose a better one in the first place?" Then, once the unpopular work is done they trade out the tarnished leadership for new leadership. Basically, the job of the unpopular CEO is to be the fall guy for all the horrible things they need to do. However, this post is about someone being an asshole. I'm not sure that private equity specifically hires a CEO to be an asshole. You enjoy the higher pay and negotiating power and wait for all the new leadership folks (perhaps besides the CEO) to improve over time. Or, you take a look at what else is out there now for an environment without this many red flags and start anew. Surprising that your career seems to be unaffected so far by all these changes, but if you think it might be, you may want to plan ahead. I mean how many workers people does the CEO interact with on a daily basis? If you're hiring managers then I'm guessing you have more than 200 employees which means that unless the dude is a massive asshole there's probably little interaction. I feel like you're overthinking it but if the guys a dick to you then maybe see what's out there in the market. Unless you think his behavior might have a negative financial impact on the company or he might fire you because it's taco tuesday and he got charged for guac, it might not be worth overthinking. FWIW when a new CEO starts it's not that unusual for them to bring in their own people or for some of the executive team to go with the old CEO to a new company. Even some engineers will follow a manager or leader. I was at a company who hired a new head of test. This is a good strategy. A better strategy would be to fire the new CEO and then mass hire to make up for the losses, but at least they're not leaving blatant gaps in the chain of command. Sure you're going to scrape the bottom of the barrel, but that's the reality your company has to face since everyone left, and it's better to have an average-bad manager than to be completely un-managed. My company is also outsourcing work for the first time ever to people who barely speak English. It's not good, but it does get better. Eventually they get into a groove and start to be productive. Might never be as productive as some of the people you lost, but when you can hire 3X the devs for the price of 1, and then task someone on your level with managing those 3X devs, you do see some returns. Of course, I've got my resume out and unless you like the idea of writing "managed a small team of oursourced developers" on your resume, you should do the same. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]warrior5715 0 points1 point2 points 2 hours ago (0 children) Leave * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]griveaux 0 points1 point2 points 2 hours ago (0 children) Publicly traded or private? I have crossed many of shit executives in my day. They get fired after the best employees leave and explicitly point the finger during their exit interview. That said, this is an excellent time for you to get a 30% pay bump and title promotion. The way to do this is to have a backup offer in your back pocket that you would be OK with taking, and then call your current leadership into a meeting to discuss compensation. Express how loyal you would like to be, but your hands are tied if they can't match the new offer. They may want a copy of the offer at 30% higher, you will say "that's ok, i can just leave instead". There is a reasonable chance they match it. In 6-12 months (whatever you are comfortable with) just find a new place to work that doesn't suck, enjoying being in a higher salary range. Start by using your network of people who just left. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]Thecrawsome 0 points1 point2 points 1 hour ago (0 children) This guy needs therapy, counseling, and he will probably never get it until someone complains hard enough. Does your CEO report to an owner / board? * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]KajayachtEngineering Manager 0 points1 point2 points 1 hour ago (0 children) Firstly, I like how you bring up Vince McMahon and the Kiss My Ass club angle. Secondly, in my experience, every CEO is an asshole when you actually start working with them. They may put on a nice front when interacting with the little people, but once you're in that board room their true colors show. I had a CEO once who literally yelled at one of my colleagues until she cried and handed out ice cream to every employee on the same day. Heck, in some ways I would say your CEO is just being more honest with the rest of your company. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]REad3r 0 points1 point2 points 1 hour ago (0 children) dead horse riding * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]calmrelax 0 points1 point2 points 1 hour ago (0 children) It sounds very like a guy who hired me recently and then retaliated because I let myself go after 4 or so hours of actual work and that was too much already. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]Mad-chuska 0 points1 point2 points 1 hour ago (0 children) Maybe he needs a good stone cold stunner to straighten him out. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]Charles_StoverFront end engineer | Staff+ | CharlesStover.com 0 points1 point2 points 46 minutes ago (0 children) Haha, just leave. You can't save a sinking ship if those with more power are actively trying to make it sink. Let the board lose the money they invested. It's their money to burn. An expensive lesson to learn. Let the CEO lose his track record. An expensive lesson to learn, but he needs the humility to make better decisions in the future. Not for you to save him and inflate his poor decision-making ego more. Take care of you, not this ship, and invest yourself and your time and your career and your income in a ship that's still floating. * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply [-]derscholl 0 points1 point2 points 4 minutes ago (0 children) Have you tried being an asshole back? * permalink * embed * save * report * give award * reply * about * blog * about * advertising * careers * help * site rules * Reddit help center * reddiquette * mod guidelines * contact us * apps & tools * Reddit for iPhone * Reddit for Android * mobile website * <3 * reddit premium * reddit coins Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.
