[unnamed-fi] Jim Ryan President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment --------------------------------------------------------------------- Today I am happy to announce Bungie will be joining the PlayStation family. First off, I want to be very clear to the community that Bungie will remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher. As such, we believe it makes sense for it to sit alongside the PlayStation Studios organization, and we are incredibly excited about the opportunities for synergies and collaboration between these two world-class groups. I have spent a lot of time with Pete Parsons, Jason Jones, and the Bungie management team to develop the right relationships where they will be fully backed and supported by Sony Interactive Entertainment and enabled to do what they do best -- build incredible worlds that captivate millions of people. Bungie's world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers. Bungie is a great innovator and has developed incredible proprietary tools that will help PlayStation Studios achieve new heights under Hermen Hulst's leadership. Here are a few words from Hermen about this exciting acquisition and what it means for gamers. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "I am absolutely thrilled to announce a new member will be joining the PlayStation family! I've been a fan of Bungie for many years. I have admired and enjoyed the games that they create - and have great respect for their skill in building worlds that gamers want to explore again and again. Bungie makes games with outstanding technology that are enormously fun to play. They also have unmatched dedication to the communities that play their games, and everyone at PlayStation, and PlayStation Studios, will be excited about what we can share and learn from them. I have spent a great deal of time with the senior team at Bungie and it is clear their experience and skills are highly complementary to our own.We will be ready to welcome and support Bungie as they continue to grow, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this incredible team." - Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios --------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are a few words from Pete Parsons, CEO of Bungie. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "We believe games have limitless potential, and that to do anything worthwhile in entertainment, we must bet big on our vision, on our studio, and on our incredible team of trusted creators who build unforgettable worlds that truly matter to people. In Sony, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie's heart. Like us, Sony believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums. Today, Bungie begins our journey to become a global multi-media entertainment company. CREATIVE FREEDOM "Since taking flight in 1991, Bungie has always charted the future with our own star map - a path that is driven by our people and for our community. We are continuing that journey with new worlds in development, and we can't wait to share them with you. With Sony, the potential for our universes is unlimited. Our future games will take bold steps into unexplored spaces for Bungie, continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, and will always be built on a foundation of creating meaningful, lifelong friendships and memories. We remain in charge of our destiny. We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play. With Sony's support, the most immediate change you will see is an acceleration in hiring talent across the entire studio to support our ambitious vision. If this speaks to you, and you want to help us put a dent in the universe, we are hiring across all disciplines for Destiny 2 and for all new worlds beyond. THREE DECADES AND COUNTING "What makes our worlds come to life is our community and our people in the studio. Our people are the soul of Bungie. Empowered by our people, we have pushed the boundaries of what we thought was possible and transformed who we are as a company. Over the past 30 years, the inviting worlds we've built have turned into thriving communities, and that community is the true magic. These communities have taken Bungie beyond games. They have forged life-long bonds, and humbled us with the real, meaningful good they drive within us and the world. More than anything, Sony understands that our people and our community are both the priority, and the heart of our success, and are willing to stand alongside us as we continue to use our platform to drive action towards a more welcoming and equitable world. Our goal is to build a place where the world's most creative and talented people can come and do their best work, no matter who they are, where they are from, or how they identify. That's the real dent in the universe we want to make -- the one we want to last beyond us. Be a part of this future with us. See you Starside." - pete --------------------------------------------------------------------- Did you like this? I've heard that Destiny 2 has improved substantially and is much better game but I have a hard time trusting giving any more of my time to game that I felt was specifically designed to treat their player base like hamsters spinning an arbitrary wheel. I am hoping with Sony backing their creative freedom and nobody asking to make hamsters out of players, their next IP can be as epic a gaming franchise as their Halo legacy. * [UP90] [UP90] hope22118140 January 31, 2022 at 10:20 am PST Congratulations on new acquisition Sony. It's a money pit as a lot of still play it on a daily basis. Spending money on cosmetics and dlc. Same way Microsoft won't be pulling COD from Playstation as the amount of revenue they would loose would be insane. + [CUSA] notnert25 January 31, 2022 at 10:57 am PST They did this because Microsoft/Xbox just acquired activision blizzard so PlayStation is trying to get a decent company on their side acquiring a smaller company wouldn't have as much effect but also halo is a big Xbox game that bungie made so they hit them where it hurt + [CUSA] ClinToN January 31, 2022 at 11:15 am PST It seems like it would make sense if they are continuing with the trend of putting their game to PC. I don't live service games and only sort of like destiny 1. I think this is a huge mistake where I don't see immediate return on investment dedicated to one IP. so many other studios I would get for this bread. Take Two, square enix already in bed with Sony, capcom and even WB who I love all their IP's but probably price way too high. Like you said still independent seem really foolish to buy. A company that makes a lot profit will definitely cost more. + [CUSA] E4xtream January 31, 2022 at 1:18 pm PST Yes, but how do they make those profits? By exploiting their player base. Look at Activision they rake in a lot of money form their live services and shooter IP's so the BUNGIE and Activision purchase go hand to hand cuz they are money making publishers and Sony/Microsoft are corporations that want to make profits and rake in money and how else do you do but having publishers who are good at it. * [I001] [I001] AriesWarlock January 31, 2022 at 11:28 am PST Finally, a sequel to Oni! Log in to Reply + [CUSA] EddyAlva1990 January 31, 2022 at 12:45 pm PST Any existing IP like Destiny will continue being a self published game, unless Destiny 3 comes out than that'll be a Sony/BUNGIE work but what this is saying is that Sony is going to profit from everything that BUNGIE makes and by that having a service like Destiny under their umbrella means more money in Sony's pocket. But BUNGIE down the line will still have to respond to Sony and BUNGIE will have the option to make Exclusive/Mulitplatform games. Bungie is a money maker for Sony * [CUSA] [CUSA] redrooster303 January 31, 2022 at 12:00 pm PST For people saying they bought them because Microsoft bought Activision and they wanted to get back at them because Halo blah blah blah, this deal started 5-6 months ago so...no. Log in to Reply * [CUSA] [CUSA] spotted-badger January 31, 2022 at 12:01 pm PST Microsoft buys 2 massive publishers and says they are going to make their games exlusive. Sony buys Bungie and immediately says xbox will have access to them, in fact Bungie is in charge and can put their games wherever they want! Unbelievable! Great thinking Jim and Herman! Your greed wanting to put your games on every piece of hardware is going to cost you in the end. Sorry but the soul of playstation is on the console. Putting first party games on xbox, Pc, mobile dilutes what makes the console special! I have bought and enjoyed every playstation console since 1995. But putting your exclusives on competing platforms because of greed is so sad and is pushing me away. You are going to destroy the soul of playstation, just like Microsoft is now. They are just a blob of companies with no connective ethos other than Gamepass. You spent 3.6 billion and you are not getting any exlusives out of it! Unreal! What should have been big news is instead garbage news. What a joke! Log in to Reply * [CUSA] [CUSA] mcloven4564 January 31, 2022 at 12:04 pm PST Maybe they could use all that money at Sony to create something truly fantastic Log in to Reply * [CUSA] [CUSA] JasonANR January 31, 2022 at 12:09 pm PST Unless staying multiplatform means already available games like Destiny 2 and maybe PC ports I think this was a horrible acquisition. Xbox is already taking away some of the biggest WRPG, Blizzard games and much more by acquiring publishers and Sony acquiring to let future games be multiplatform really devalues Playstation. I thought Playstation players paying for MLB while Xbox got it on Game Pass was bad, but news keep coming and Playstation really looks like the worse option this gen. Hopefully we get at least some good news soon and "spartacus" end up being something worth paying for unlike the already available ps now and ps plus. Log in to Reply + [CUSA] EddyAlva1990 January 31, 2022 at 1:01 pm PST You obviously dont know how the industry works. It's not all about Exclusives, BUNGIE will make exclusives for Sony as well, new IP but BUNGIE will still make existing IP on all existing platforms. That is the deal there the money making, the fact that Sony will now get to rake in cash from everything that BUNGIE makes is a huge plus because this allows Sony to make bigger purchases down the line. It's more money in Sony's pocket. Why would Sony completely lock BUNGIE down when the have a player base of 20+ million down to 2 million that is so silly from them. + [CUSA] JasonANR January 31, 2022 at 1:46 pm PST @EddyAlva1990 Already existing IP and live-service games already available (Destiny2) makes sense to stay multiplatform like I said in my original comment, but maybe you missed it or English being my second language made it hard to understand. But did you read the interview? Unless they lied, it's PR speak or whatever, new IPs will be multiplatform with Bungie deciding. Also exclusives matter a lot when buying a console, not all people can afford all of them and they will choose the one with more games or the games they like the most. The competition is taking away so many IP from playstation that you will have to move/join their ecosystem one way or another unless you don't care about those games. And yes I understand that sony going "beyond consoles" will make them more money, but at that point what will playstation offer that is better than elsewhere. I only hope "Spartacus" ends up being equal or better than Game Pass. + [CUSA] EddyAlva1990 January 31, 2022 at 1:57 pm PST @JasonANR You do know that most of these interviews are PR talk and not downplaying what they said but this doesn't mean that down the line BUNGIE won't make an exclusive game for Sony. You dont make a 3.6 Billion purchase to hand out everything to everyone, eventually there will be some lock down exclusive on the PS. As for Spartacus who knows exactly what they are doing I doubt bigger and better than Game pass but I do believe that there will be some good perks like maybe the upcoming Destiny DLC might just be free on PS while everyone else has to pay for it, little things like that. + [CUSA] JasonANR January 31, 2022 at 2:36 pm PST @EddyAlva1990 Microsoft did make similar statement about exclusivity, but they were vague. Bungie seems to be more clear about new games. "Q. Bungie has future games in development, will they now become PlayStation exclusives? No. We want the worlds we are creating to extend to anywhere people play games. We will continue to be self-published, creatively independent, and we will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community." Unless by multiplatform the mean PS5 and PC and it wouldn't be a lie. + [CUSA] EddyAlva1990 January 31, 2022 at 2:46 pm PST @JasonANR Honestly man all these purchases like Bethesda, Activision, Bungie, they are all a coin toss, yes theyve all said exclusive this and that and this wont and this maybe and blah and blah that. All that could change until these companies really start breaking ground with them and they start seeing the profits on whether there is or not, then will start seeing what could happen, anything could change down the line. * [3000] [3000] feudalbaal1 January 31, 2022 at 12:12 pm PST I have been with playstation since the launch of ps1 and I don't see myself leaving anytime soon.
