As a continuation of our blocking improvements, we are rolling out a revamped blocking experience starting today. You will begin to see these changes soon. What does "revamped blocking experience" mean? We will be evolving the blocking experience so that it not only removes a blocked user's content from your experience, but also removes your content from their experience--i.e., a user you have blocked can't see or interact with you. Our intention is to provide you with better control over your safety experience. This includes controlling who can contact you, who can see your content, and whose content you see. What will the new block look like? It depends if you are a user or a moderator and if you are doing the blocking vs. being blocked. [See stickied comment below for more details] How is this different from before? Previously, if I blocked u/IAmABlockedUser, I would not see their content, but they would see mine. With the updated blocking experience, I won't see u/IAmABlockedUser's content and they won't see mine either. Important notes To prevent abuse, we are installing a limit so you cannot unblock someone and then block them again within a short time frame. We have also put into place some restrictions that will prevent people from being able to manipulate the site by blocking at scale. This allows you to keep the context of the conversation and report posts/ comments if needed. Keeping content accessible allows you to protect yourself from harassment that would otherwise be unseen. Note that group chats are an exception, if you are in a group chat with a blocked user, all users in that chat will be able to see your replies. We have set up reminders in any group chats that contain a blocked user to make sure this stays top of mind. People who have been blocked: You will not have the option to have 1:1 contact or see content from the user who has blocked you. Content from users who have blocked you will appear deleted. As such, you will not be able to reply to or award users who have blocked you. Moderators who have blocked: Same experience as regular users, but when you are in your community you will still see users who you have blocked without the interstitial so you can safely block without jeopardizing moderation. Moderators who have been blocked: Same experience as regular users, but when you post and distinguish yourself as a mod in your community, users who have blocked you will be able to see your content. Additionally, you will be able to see the content of a user who has blocked you when they post or comment in a community that you moderate. When viewing user profiles, you will be able to see the history of a user who has blocked you within the communities you moderate. Personally, if I block someone I could really care less if they see my content or reply to it. If they want to harass me "in public" and show everyone else what a jerk they are, then so be it. Giving a harasser any kind of feedback normally just intensifies the harassment. Ignoring them is usually the best course of action. You might block a whole student body at a college campus, or block an entire company office. People do use reddit for work. Ipv4 and nat to be able to connect the number of devices we have (generally one ip per building instead of per device) means that ipv4 doesn't identify a specific device. That means bans with it do collateral damage. If new people come along to prove me wrong, I simply add them to my block list and then try again in a week. Reddit puts very little effort into stopping people from using alts to get around bans, so I doubt they'll put any more effort into this. They don't want to IP ban people, because there's plenty of legitimate reasons for someone to use the same IP as another person. (also, IP bans are trivial to get around if you actually care, sometimes just unplugging your router is enough) So if you clear your browser's cache/cookies, and make a new account, Reddit treats it as a completely new one. I'm on one sub where people like to toe the line with the rules and always end up getting banned, but there's a conspicuous number of accounts that are only a couple months old. Its pretty obvious they're alts of banned users, and half the time if you ask them this they'll admit it, but nobody actually cares. And even if they did care, they couldn't do anything. What they could do (but haven't done) is automate the detection of alts that are created from the same browser. However, I know my old main is permabanned from one sub, and despite that I used this account to comment on a post in that sub (it was on r/all and I didn't notice at the time, don't ban me for this). Those comments posted normally, got replied to, and I never got banned for them, despite that technically being ban evasion, an offense that should get all of my accounts banned. Still, like I said this is incredibly easy to get around, to the point that I think if its implemented more people will try to exploit it out of spite than will actually be stopped by it. Maybe could even have it so that, say if you block me, and I comment on your post, other people can see my reply, but you yourself can't. This is how the system used to work. I would block you, and the only thing that changes is I don't see your posts. The current system means you don't see mine. Because many people frequently use alts for various reasons, I do not think this is an effective change. Especially people who do things which would frequently get them blocked are probably also getting banned relatively often, so they won't be using only one account. The idea behind it seems to be that you block someone and that stops them from following you. However, unlike Facebook, the default for a reddit comment is that anyone can see it. So if you block me to prevent me seeing your post, all I have to do is log out and then I can see it again. This change just seems designed to make people feel safer posting personal information on Reddit (without actually making it any safer), because they want Reddit to be more like social media and less like the old message boards that it used to be. Let's say all people fall into two categories, X or Y. X and Y tend to disagree with each other, but for now they're still able to interact with each other and ideas can flow between them. With Twitter's system, what has happened is members of X created a list of everyone in Y, and everyone in X is encouraged use the mass blocker tool to block everyone on that list as a sign of group membership. And of course everyone in Y is also encouraged to do the same to everyone in X.
