The K|Lens One is the world's first light field lens. It can be used with all standard full-frame cameras and provides you with additional data besides a picture or a video. These "Rich Light Field Data" are depth maps, but also different perspectives of a scene taken at the moment of shooting. * Where is the K|Lens One produced? The lens is developed and manufactured in cooperation with Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH. The "SeeDeep" software was developed by our team in Saarbrucken. * What will the K|Lens One cost? The recommended retail price of the K|Lens One including software and accessories is expected to be 3,599 EUR (approx. $4,200) in the long run. Unfortunately, we were unable to conduct our planned workshop tour due to pandemic restrictions. In the "APPLICATION" section we have therefore provided you with Data Sets (color images including depth information), which you are welcome to use and to test all functionalities. * How does the K|Lens technology work? A mirror system inside the lens projects nine slightly different perspectives of the scene in reduced size on to nine predefined sub-spaces of the camera sensor. Each of these perspectives has a size of one ninth of a normal image. The mirror system works similarly to a kaleidoscope, hence the name K|Lens. So you can also think of using the K|Lens as shooting a scene with nine separate cameras, each with smaller sensors, from slightly different angles at the same time. In this respect, the K|Lens works similarly to the multi-camera system of a smartphone, only with more viewing angles, a high-resolution sensor and high-quality glass optics. * What is the resolution of K | Lens photos? At the moment of capture, the resolution of the image is reduced to one-ninth of the sensor resolution. However, since nine views of the scene are available, each offering different content, these can be processed together using a Multiview Superresolution process, so that at least 50% of the sensor resolution is achieved in the color image available to you. Superresolution processes are also already being used by other manufacturers. When a single image is available as input, the term Single View Superresolution (SSR) is used. SSR methods are limited in performance, since image content must be "invented" in some form, usually using AI. However, since our method is based on multiple native views, so-called Multiview Superresolution (MSR), the increase in resolution is based on real content and is therefore much more powerful. As a result, our aim is that you can achieve a resolution of about 20MP with a K|Lens and a 40MP camera. For video, this calculation applies accordingly for the frames. In addition, methods such as pixel shift can be used to achieve an even higher resolution. * What focal lengths will there be? The K|Lens One will have a focal length of 80mm. We are planning releases of further focal lengths in the future. * How is the K|Lens One different from other lenses? The K|Lens One consists of three parts. The main lens is hardly different in design to a normal lens with a focal length of about 27mm. The "Image Multiplier" divides the image into 9 slightly different "subviews". The third part is a pick-up system, which transfers these 9 subviews exactly to the camera sensor. You can find more information on this topic here: Technology > The inner design This design makes K|Lens One a bit longer and heavier than usual 80mm fixed focal length lenses. * How does the K | Lens One communicate with the camera? The K | Lens One is a purely mechanical prime lens. Focus and aperture are controlled manually. * What accessories do I need to work with the K|Lens? In addition to the lens, we also provide an in-house software "SeeDeep" for download. After you have installed the software, the functionalities are available to you from now on in your familiar environment. In addition, you can also pre-order an external display as an add-on, which displays the center image of the 9s "Kaleidoview". This helps in the recording process, especially for videos, but is not necessary for taking pictures. * How is the depth information made accessible and how do I work with it? We have developed our own software ("SeeDeep"), which we will provide to customers free of charge. The calculation of the depth information is done after importing the K|Lens images and videos into the software. The RGB images or videos, the depth information, point clouds and the 9 images with slightly different perspectives can be exported from the software and then opened in all common post-processing programs (such as Adobe Photoshop). In addition, the images, including depth information, can be transferred to 3D displays. * Does the K|LensOne also work in video mode? Yes. Our software can also calculate depth information in video mode, which is then made available as a "Depth Channel". * For which operating systems is the "SEE DEEP" software suitable? We will offer the "SeeDeep" software for Windows and for Mac OS (Apple). * What are the system requirements for the "SEE DEEP" software? The software is quite performance-intensive due to the complex algorithms and the use of artificial intelligence. A computer with at least 8GB GPU, sufficient RAM and a powerful processor is recommended here. * Will there be updates for "SEE DEEP"? Will there be updates for "SeeDeep"? Yes, we will continue to develop the software. This will include improvements to the quality of our depth calculations, as well as new features. We already have a lot of ideas here - so you can already look forward to what's to come! * What is the difference between the K|Lens and the Lytro Illum? The Lytro Illum was based on a completely different technology that used a microlens array in front of the image sensor that generated a very high number of low-resolution perspectives. This required the development of Lytro's special camera, in which a human-viewable image is created only after further processing by special software. Due to the complexity of the technology, the final resolution of the images was greatly reduced, unwanted artifacts could often not be excluded, and further processing was only possible in Lytro's own post-processing suite. The K|Lens One is compatible with all camera types and existing software tools. Due to the very simple optical system, complete perspectives are generated without further processing. Due to further developments in computational photography, much more stable methods of depth calculation, resolution increase and avoidance of artifacts are available today. In this respect, the K|Lens One works more like the multi-camera system of a smartphone, only with a high-resolution sensor and high-quality glass optics. Another difference is that you can always work with K|Lens One images - regardless of the software. This is because images taken with the K|Lens One are captured in RAW or JPG format. Also, we offer our software as a downloadable file, which means you are not dependent on our servers (as was the case with Lytro). * How bright is the lens? To fully exploit the potential of the K|Lens' functionalities, the aperture of the K|Lens should be closed as far as possible. This ensures that the image is captured with the greatest possible depth of field, which in turn greatly aids the calculation of depth information. You should therefore only open the aperture if the light situation does not permit a shot with a closed aperture. Here you also have the usual other tools at your disposal, i.e., exposure time, ISO, additional lighting, flash, etc. With modern mirrorless camera models in particular, increasing the ISO value is possible in most shooting situations without creating unwanted noise. With the K|Lens, you can easily work indoors in daylight with minimum exposure time, adapted ISO value and an almost closed aperture. If you open the aperture, the K|Lens becomes faster. But the depth of field is also reduced. This means that the quality of depth information, and thus the flexibility in your post-processing options, is reduced. You can still give the image an open-aperture character very selectively in post-processing, even with the aperture closed. As long as the depth-of-field area you are aiming for is still in focus, this is also possible without any problems when the aperture is open. * With which post-processing programs is the K|Lens compatible? Once a depth map for photos or a depth channel for videos is created using "SeeDeep", the image (with depth map) can be loaded into all common post-processing programs (e.g., Photoshop, GIMP, Paint, Darktable, Affinity, Premiere, After Effects, Nuke, etc.) and further processed there.
