The global chip shortage is giving rise to a small group of
little-known companies whose products are increasingly essential to
the plans of semiconductor industry titans.

The companies make parts called substrates, which connect chips to
the circuit boards that hold them in personal computers and other
devices. The components are relatively simple but as vital to a
computer chip's operation as the silicon at its core.
