The list of my publications, including those for Cambridge University Press, is available at https:// independent.academia.edu/IgorPetrov40 On August 6, 2021, whilst conducting archival research and working with documents of the Nazi Germany's propaganda ministry, I located an important primary source. In the previously unpublished document, Joseph Goebbels, minister of propaganda at the time, claimed that the stay of German occupational troops in Paris had led to the development of what he called, quote, "spiritual syphilis." Goebbels had thus demanded all German soldiers, having stayed in Paris for six months, be transferred to the Eastern Front to negate any "adverse" effects of billeting in the French capital. Considering this an important piece of primary evidence, the one that further details the Nazi thought process, I took to publishing the document on my Facebook page. The German original was supplied as a jpeg attachment, and in addition I provided the Russian translation of the text, since my Facebook following is primarily Russian speaking. Acting in good faith, I did not comment on any of Goebbels' words, considering them to be so obviously preposterous that its sheer absurdity rendered any additional commentary redundant. On August 14, 2021, that is eight days after the original Facebook posting, I received a message that my post from August 6 violates the Community Standards of Facebook. The message, however, failed to specify as to which Standard has been breached. Nevertheless, the publication from August 6 was deleted, and my account was suspended for 24 hrs. I had appealed the decision and swiftly, only 13 minutes (!) after my appeal, the initial decision was reinforced. Unfortunately, due to the lack of transparency, the decision of Facebook moderators is hardly comprehensible. It is impossible to grasp exactly which part was so displeasing: the quotation from Goebbels per se, its theoretically offensive (to Parisians) nature, or the use of the word "syphilis." Even if one of the three explanations provided is true, the situation remains utterly absurd, bordering on Kafkaesque. It must be stressed that any objective investigation of history and research of the past becomes simply impossible if quotations from primary sources are grounds for punishment. Any curtailing of documentary evidence leads not to peace in the community but to the preordained failure to learn from history. It eventually allows the tragedies of the past to be repeated anew. Thus, any limitation of academic activity is a grave disservice to the society and community. As a historian, I would like to obtain a set of clearly articulated criteria for any future primary source publications on Facebook (what is allowed\what is not allowed). Sir Charles Chaplin was one of the first to demonstrate that the fight against hate ideologies such as Nazism can be conducted with the means of humour, and not only by revealing documentation on Nazi crimes. Following in Chaplin's steps, I publish primary documentation that aptly depicts the narrow-mindedness and ignorance of Nazi leadership, as well as I regularly publish documents detailing the Nazi crimes. If Facebook moderators indeed think that someone might find these Goebbels' words offensive, they might consider taking an urgent medical leave to evade the risk of a professional burnout. However, it is much worse if the decision was not an honest mistake of one or two moderators but instead reflects a systemic problem. In that case, a natural question that begs to be answered is: could it be that the moderators of the Russian section of Facebook pay lip service to democracy, when at heart they are in fact sympathetic to Nazism and its leaders? If the latter is true, then surely any ridicule of Goebbels or mockery of his ideology is unacceptable to these employees, and they are using their professional position to bolster their own worldview.
