As one of Cover's early Data Engineers, you will have a great opportunity to define how we create, process, interpret data and lead this team. This is a significant responsibility, and we are looking for someone armed with exceptional technical skills and the know-how of building out world class data infrastructure from the ground level. You will work closely with engineers and business analysts to build systems that ensure Cover's data is accessible, accurate, and scalable. Responsibilities + Develop, construct, test and maintain data architecture + Perform all of the necessary data transformations to populate data into a warehouse that is optimized for end users + Prepare data for statutory reports, business analysis and statistical modeling + Design, build, and launch new data extraction, transformation, and loading processes in production + Ensure architecture will support the growing requirements of the business + Proactively discover opportunities for data acquisition + Guiding the data team on day to day responsibilities as well as strategic planning with various internal partners. Requirements + 4+ years of relevant experience in Data Engineering, Big Data, or related field + Expertise in SQL and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL + Knowledge of multiple data formats such as tabular data, flat data files, CSV, JSON and XML + Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, R, or similar + Strong analytical skills related to working with unstructured datasets + Prior experience in data modeling, ETL and reporting + Ability to work cross functionally with multiple business units + Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Math, Physics or a related technical field + Excellent written and verbal communication skills + Previous experience leading or managing a data team Candidates with the following experience will be given priority + Understanding of P&C insurance, with particular regard to common industry accounting conventions for premiums and losses. + Familiarity with accounting concepts Additional nice-to-have's + Worked at or founded a startup (i.e. built something) + Experience with FiveTran and data build tool + Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g. Periscope, Tableau etc.) + Experience with cloud environments + Experience with graph databases (e.g. Neo4j) + Hands on working experience with streaming data systems The preferred location for this role is in Toronto, ON but will consider candidates in California or remote.
